When I put my magical device (Sima Digital Copy Master) between the laserdisc player and DVD recorder, the picture straightens up, I take it out the pictures dims & brightens. nothing wrong with my setup, there is some kind of copy guard somewhere. Some of my laserdisc dont do this, but any of them that are Fox (Like Star Wars) do. I have VCRs hooked together and without the Sima device they do the same thing on most tapes. The older style of "Macrovision" was I think called "Copygaurd" and is on VHS tapes, they may also be on Laserdiscs.
