I think it's more that the Bible passages on the subject reflect the sort of prejudices that these people have.

The Old Testament doesn't say "Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind: it is not what God wants us to do and we will advise strongly against it for church members and hope one day non-church members will come around to stop doing it through the strength of our argument".

The men who wrote the Bible were as bigoted in their way as the bleach attackers, regardless of religion.

One sees people expressing their difference as a contamination to be bleached, the other sees it as a contamination to buried under stones (the funeral practise of the day and region).

There is a war between the forces of progress and the forces of bronze age tribalism and I'm not sure if I'm optimistic anymore.
