Harmy's STAR WARS Respecialized Edition '97 - AVCHD and MKV Released — Page 3

Oops, I'm tired :/ Of course DS, not DD. Sorry !

I don't think there is something changed between 97 and 2004 in SW (little effects maybe), but there is in ESB (the whole Vader/Emperor conversation) and maybe in RotJ (the final scene should be longer because of Naboo and Coruscant, but I'm not sure).

Empire definitely has differences (also the Emperor scream from Jedi added in 1997 on Luke's fall near the end and removed in 2004) and Jedi probably what you mentionned. But I can't recall any differences between 1997 and 2004 on the original Star Wars. The new dubbing actor for Han Solo in the Jabba scene is the same, Obi-Wan scream to frighten the Sand People had not been changed at the time. So where would be the difference?

I love it! The only thing I noticed was that the explosions during the space battle / trench run still have that darn over-saturated orange look to them. That's something that looked way more natural on the 1997 SE release. But who care, the beautiful SE Death Star explosion and the Rebel tactical table matte painting are back to their former glory!

This might now become my favourite version of ANH to watch. Team Blu's SE restoration being a close second. The only things I prefer about the Blu-Ray now is the DTS-HD audio and the upgraded CGI Jabba.

This looks amazing! I hope to see the whole trilogy get this 97SE treatment. Thank you!

I'm still confused how you got the Jabba scene to look so good? What was the source for that?

Author

Harmy correct me if I'm wrong but I would guess the jabba scene is the color corrected blu-ray with Team Blu's jabba matted on top of the newer jabba

Look at post #28 and #29 on page 2.

Yes, but what's the source of the 97 Jabba? It looks better than any 97SE source I've seen.

So the FLUNK? -- After doing a screen comparison, I can see that now.

Well, like I said, I used Team Blu's upscale and I think they used the TB version as a source.

Great job! Congrats on ESB DeEd v2.0 also!

The inline image and linked gallery in the first post are broken. Is there artwork for this or were they all samples?

Forgive me if I've missed it, but is there cover art for the Respecialized edition somewhere?  Either that matches the Despecialized artwork from Harmy or custom made by others?

There's a thread in the DVD Covers section of the forum by Harmy that may have what you're looking for.

I looked through that thread, but didn't find much for the Respecialized version.

Are the chapter markers for this identical to V2.5 Despecialized? I'm thinking no.

Author

If not identical, then extremely close.

Hmmm.....so I'm trying to make a Blu-Ray from the .mkv using the same method I used to make the awesome v2.5 despecialized but something is messing up the aspect ratio on playback. And, strangely, only my Oppo BDP-83 can play it all. When it does, it is stretching the image vertically (thus eliminating the black bars). Before you ask, no it is not my TV or the BD player, as they play all other discs just fine.

I suspect it is probably tsmuxer. The last time I did anything with it, I was all the way back on version 1.10.6 I believe, but I started with recent versions of everthing this time around and tsmuxer is at 2.6.12 now. I do see some changes to the interface for sure. I have some vague recollection that the older tsmuxer is preferred for this source material, but I could be wrong. I also remember seeing the option to create a "blu-ray folder" (and, in fact, that is what I did before) but that is missing from 1.10.6. In short, I am confused to say the least.

Since I usually just take the default settings for everything, does anyone know what I need to look at to fix this?

Perhaps the AR setting? It is at "As source" right now, which also seems to be what is was with the older tsmuxer. If I change it, none of the other choices seem to be good. Certainly not 16:9 as that is what I think I am getting now.

Another possibility is ImgBurn is doing something but I do not think so. I used the latest version of that to burn an iso from tsmuxer and then an older verion (2.4.2.0) to burn a Blu-Ray Folder. Both gave the same results.

I want to get this right for my next burn. Already wasted two BD-Rs.    :(

Jdryyz, that's because the Respecialized is cropped to 1280x540 instead of being 1280x720. You would have to add black bars to go from 540 to 720.

Why are you trying to make a Blu-ray from the mkv ??? Why don't you download it (AVCHD) ? The aspect ratio is wrong, the mkv is cropped and not 16:9. So you have to use some software first which will re-create the black borders but again I see no reason to do so, I think it's really better to download the AVCHD

According the info I read on tehp..., the resolution is 1280x540p... So the source video is not a 16:9 ratio (which is needed for blu-ray discs, if I understand it correctly).  It looks as if the black bars have been trimmed off, leaving just the picture for the film itself.  However, I've noticed that the AVCHD version has a resolution of 1280x720p, which is 16:9.

Maybe he preferred the higher bitrate file, not noticing that it was cropped to the scope frame? Easy mistake to make.

Anyway, Harmy has said that the AVCHD version, while at a lower bitrate, will probably look better than a re-encoded version of the MKV (it having been encoded directly from source).

That said, if you prefer to use the MKV (to preserve your Spleen ratio, or just if you feel like seeing what happens) I can recommend UncropMKV as a friendly all-in-one encoder to make BD friendly video (it harnesses x264 together with a straightforward letterboxing script).

Thanks for the info, guys! I did not realize it was cropped. This is why VLC playback of the .mkv shows no apparent differences.   :)

I have no objection to just getting the AVCHD version (unless it is missing audio tracks or has reduced bitrate). I already spent the time getting the .mkv, though, so that is what I am working with. Again, it worked fine in the past and now I know why.

UncropMKV sounds intriguing. I will take a look at that.
