Actually, it was the more recent larger Hasbro version that introduced that feature. The idea of a smaller ship aboard the Falcon did figure into the plot of The Wookiee Storybook, published in 1978.
That NEEDS to be in the new movie.
Hell, that needs to be in EVERY movie!
