What do you HATE about the EU? — Page 20

Apparently Lucas considered having Anakin's lightsaber in ROTS change to red like a mood ring.

I hate that they switched from "foggy window" to retconning everything.

Which comic was that?

One of Brian Wood's comics.

 Not an Infinities title?

Yeah, you're going to have to be more specific and come up with an issue number. Brian Wood's Star Wars comic is set in-between SW and ESB so I don't see how that fits in there at all.

Want to know what I really, really, really hate about the modern EU? I hate how Vader -- at least in the comics -- is almost always portrayed as this half-insane rageaholic who resolves all his problems with a lightsaber.

An Imperial officer says a tiny, little thing that Vader doesn't like? Vader's runs him through with his lightsaber. A squad of stormtroopers is sent to bring Vader before the Emperor? Vader dices them to bits with his lightsaber. Obi-Wan taunts Vader from beyond the grave? Vader takes out his lightsaber and starts swinging it through the air while yelling his head off like some crazy schizo off his meds.

It started with Vader's Quest and has only gotten worse ever since. Thank God, though, that I can read the Marvel comics for some good Vader characterization.

Viva la Marvel!

Vader does make bookends out of an imperial officer in Splinter of the Mind's Eye, so I guess you can blame Alan Dean Foster for inspiring others. ;)

Taunting Vader seems like a dick move for Ben.

Yeah, DE. He seems to really fly off the handle at the slightest thing in the EU.

Anakin I could see as having uncontrolled bouts of saber-swinging rage, but I always saw Vader as mostly in control, in a sort of Bruce-Banner-Always-Angry way. I mean, there are obviously things that get Vader's goat, as we saw in Star Wars and Empire, but he always handled them with the Force, which just seems more "mature" to me. I feel like him just slicing poor Captain Needa in half wouldn't have had the same effect as "accepting" his apology in an unconcerned voice as he telepathically strangled him to death.

And, Wook, I always remember that moment from Splinter very vividly. One of the first pieces of EU I read as an impressionable child.

As for Marvel I seem to remember Vader doing exactly that sort of thing to the surviving Rebel in Star Wars #21.

Vader simply gave the Rebel what he wanted, an end to his pain. You can't be vague with a Sith lord. ;)

He was more into tongue lashing his subordinates than cutting them down in the early Marvel book. Post Empire, there was a group of Imperial officers fed up with all the Force chokes, who tried to kill him though.

Yeah, that scene shocked me pretty good. (Would Lucas have actually filmed that had Splinter become the sequel?) Think I was down with the Flu or something the first time I ever read the book, and really took it way too seriously. One plot point near the end made me pretty mad too. ;)

It's always struck me that, as far as the films go, Vader doesn't become a raging Force-choke-aholic until ESB. In the first film he only chokes one guy, and that's to prove a point about the power of the Force. He clearly enjoys it, but he doesn't even get to kill him. (Notably, Tarkin stops him--so he clearly has freer rein in the sequels, where his own authority is more paramount.)

I think Larry Kasdan really ran with the idea of Vader Force-choking underlings at the drop of a hat, to the point where it became a running joke.

However, this is certainly an improvement over the Leigh Brackett draft of the script, where Vader just nonchalantly dismisses stupid officers with lines like "Leave me, you incompetent idiot."

That was probably one reason why Lucas disliked the script--judging by Splinter he was probably much more on board with Kasdan's take.

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

It is hard to say whether it was Kasdan or actually Lucas. There was one more Lucas' draft in between Brackett and Kasdan.

Just stumbled across this pile of junk on Wookieepedia tonight.

^Well, the article says neither he nor the story he appears in were meant to be canon, so I don't see a problem with the whole thing.

You sure the second isn't just two lightsabres (one with a curved hilt)?

I can't imagine what the practical benefit of that would be.

I'm surprised that Motti's windpipe doesn't have its own Wookieepedia article.

Or the piece of food Luke tossed away after Yoda nibbled on it.

Hmm ... perhaps I should list Wookieepedia as something I don't like about the EU.

I love Wookieepedia. However, I'm glad that most of its contents aren't canon anymore.

Wookieepedia has it's uses, but it's always been too revisionist for my tastes; not enough distinction has been placed between pre-SE/PT factoids and SE/PT+ factoids in most of their articles.

Yeah, I misread the source. I thought he made it into the New Essential Guide to Characters. My bad.

The two characters that i hate most are Vitiate and Darth Krayt. Vitiate for reasons that we've discussed and Krayt for making the galaxy predestined to suffer.
