Welcome to the official thread for the discussion of Return of the Jedi - 35mm Theatrical Version 1.0

This is the collective project that is not officially part of OT, or Lucasfilm, 20th Century Fox, Disney, etc. but in the spirit of preservation, has been put together with the wish to relive the memory of the original 1983 Return of the Jedi.

We hope to make quick progress, but we have some more steps to take.

This is the place to keep on top on the when/where/how/who/and why of it.

A lot of information is  sprinkled through the original discussion thread about - Star Wars 35mm . we’ll take just the details and emphasize them here.

If you want to discuss technical stuff, post it here.

This is just to keep people informed on the status and updates.

What is it? - A conversion/preservation of the 35mm version of Return of the Jedi from: Multiple LPP prints

Who are we? - A group of individuals working on it, color restoration and technical advisory, support

Why? - Because we love the Star Wars Trilogy, and appreciate George Lucas.</span>

When will it be out? - Its done when its done.

Where can we find out more? - Right here.

Technical details…

Video - Our goal is to have a preserved version that will be released in a high definition 1080p anamorphic MKV

that is full frame for people with projectors (25gigs), and bluray disc (25gigs), and a dual layer dvd (9gigs) as the final product.

There might be several other downsamples in avi/mp4 later on.

Audio - we will have the 35mm English theatrical mix.

Thanks from our entire team!

There were a few missing links posted on ImageShack. We are switching to Imgur, since that is still free hosting.

Pretty cool. Multiple LLP prints" is impressive and really good to hear,  I've been slowly realizing I have no idea what JEDI actually looks like.

 Indeed!

Are these prints in better shape (as far as scratches, glue, and other damage), than some of the SW/ESB prints?

All of them are in very good shape, with a few splices.

(Just to note : The Star Wars LPP was also in very good condition except for a few headers and tails).

We should be able to get a complete print out of them.

Love it.... simply love these 35mm samples, with all the grain and texture intact :)

I'm looking forward to this more than Star Wars and Empire, primarily because Jedi was most harmed by the changes but also because I'm not ashamed to admit it's my favourite of the three.

Any shots of the original Sy Snootles?

After seeing the latest pics I simply have to ask - didn't you guys plan to release first a "raw" scan and later a "cleaned up" version of it? Because I hate to repeat myself, but the samples you're posting look good enough to me. So is the plan to release the "raw" scans dead already?

No current plans to release the raw scans.

What would be the point, when the movie hasn't been released.

There are plenty of splices, and other fixes that need to be done, and as shown with Empire, while it may look 'clean', we would never want to release anything that isn't up to the standard that we want.

That's why we're making the effort of doing it right. It might take longer this way. But the results will be worth the wait, just like anything else.

You can see the results of the years of cleanup effort in the Star Wars samples as posted.

Hi Team, I was hoping you could describe what you mean by "full frame for people with projectors" in more detail? I have a pretty nice projector, and am very interested in your work. :)

I think he means the full 2.35 image as opposed to adding black bars.

The Jabba subtitles and the Death Star hologram are particularly interesting to me, since they seem to indicate that the soft focus is in fact deliberate (or at least unavoidable during actual filming), and not a limitation of the transfer process used at the time. If the 35mm theatrical prints were simply low quality, I wouldn't expect the subtitles or the Death Star hologram to show any fine details, but the subtitles are pretty sharp compared to the rest of the image, and the lines of the Death Star holograms reveal some pretty minute gaps between them in places.
