You should have seen the deal about the censored scenes? We may get a print with those scenes in it...

Sorry, I've been mainly posting updates on AMPS, and not here... Let me do a quick recap.

There were two prints on ebay - one Tech and the other the '82 version. I was supposed to have deposits on both, but the Tech one wound up selling out from under me. I still had a deposit on the '82 copy, and was all set to finish the purchase when he told me that two of the reels were stolen at a garage sale. I asked if I could buy the remaining reels at a pretty decent price and he replied that in his opinion the print was unsaleable. Anyway, that's what happened so far. We may have a lead on another print, but you'll have to read about that at AMPS (for security's sake)... :)

Sounds like your seller wanted out so he could make more money .......  :(

Do you believe the person in question? Because that's a really fishy story on the surface, and that's putting it mildly.

No, I've never met the person, nor had any kind of connection short of email. As far as the Tech reel, it was sold out from under me and I have talked with the guy, and the story on his end definitely checks out. But yeah, the '82 one is definitely fishy, to say the least.

Yeah, I just joined. Now I have another great place to frequent.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

So, double post over from AMPS:

"Oh my god. I just put the Fantasia reel I have on the inspection table and immediately took it off. I'm going to have to do this on the floor (as much as it pains me to do it) - there's at least 80 different sections of film, probably more, all cut up. I'm guessing the print was either bandsawed or chopped to make bookmarks or something. Anyway, I have a new Sunday project... I guess that's what I'll be doing today...

Stupid question - how many reels does the Pastoral normally take up? I'm wondering if we even have the full sequence (because it's missing a number of important scenes - the unicorns sliding down the waterfall, for example). Also, for what it's worth, the print is on Kodak Eastman SP."

This is about the reel that Silverwook and I purchased from the ebay seller who was splitting up the reels...

Damn. It's always a crapshoot when the seller isn't knowledgeable about what they have. Of course, they might jack up the price if they did.

It couldn't possibly be from the really short 1942 version?

Nope - on Eastman SP stock circa 1975 (from my best guess). There's images of the date codes over at AMPS if somebody wants to double check me... I was never very good at accurate film dating.

That doesn't bode well for the censored shots being in there. :/

Hate to necropost, but it's still relevant.

I was following this on AMPS, and seeing as I can't find it on the new reddit location (most likely due to reddit being foreign to me) I wanted to know where I could find more on the progress of this preservation.

He claimed he used this soundtrack and a mono mix (where he got that, I haven't a clue).

The mono track was preserved on the Dolby linear tracks of certain VHS editions, while the stereo track was in HiFi.

“That’s impossible, even for a computer!”

“You don't do ‘Star Wars’ in Dobly.”

That's one thread I don't think has been ported over yet.
