The LIS comic, written by Will Robinson himself, Billy Mumy, introduced the idea that recovered alien technology was used to achieve interstellar travel by the 1990's. And the shadowy figures giving Dr. Smith his orders also had a sinister alien background.
Still, I love that the Jupiter 2 launched on my birthday, and the SciFi channel marathon held in 1997 was a fun day for me.
There isn't anything in EFNY that wasn't impossible in the real 1997. I'm sure the inevitable soulless remake will push the date ahead a tad.
