Their outfits are prequel inspired, but they definitely still have the power pak and cable:

There are other pictures which depict some of them with modern lightsabers, like this one of Adjunta Pall:

Well, in the later TOTJ comics, it was established that around 5000 BBY, the Jedi wielded archaic lightsabers with external power packs while the Sith didn't wield any lightsabers at all. That all got retconned later, though (I'm not sure where), and now the Jedi are depicted as wielding archaic lightsabers as long ago as 7000 BBY, with the first Sith Lords even depicted as wielding modern lightsabers.

I don't see how archaic sabers in 5000 BBY = no sabers at all in 7000 BBY

Hmm ... yes, I suppose you could be right, but the fact that none of the Sith during the Great Hyperspace War were shown wielding lightsabers does imply that they had no knowledge of the technology.

Still, it's not outside the realm of possibility that lightsaber technology was only a relatively recent invention during the time of the Hundred-Year Darkness and only a few Jedi used them. In that case, I suppose archaic lightsabers existing in that time period could make sense even if the Sith didn't have the technology for themselves.

The first Sith Lords were said to have had lightsabers before they were said to have lived in 7000 BBY, so lightsabers existing in 7000 BBY isn't the initial problem.

What I hate most about SWTOR is that the Sith Empire uses the Bendu symbol and has "Moffs" who dress just like the Moffs of the Galactic Empire. Aside from SWTOR, the movies, TcW, and the EU have always agree that the Galactic Empire got those things from the Republic, not from the Sith, and I've always loved the irony that those things came from the Republic.

Sounds to me that the writers of TOR are so unoriginally crazy about making the Empire a modern incarnation of the Sith Empire that they're retroactively assigning Imperial motiffs to TOR's Sith Empire in order to make it look like Palpatine deliberately designed his Empire to emulate the Sith Empire.

Correct, and Palpatine never struck me as the emulating type. Last time I checked, Palpatine believed himself to be one and only person fit to rule. Furthermore, it makes the Republic and Jedi look stupid.

I hate that the EU turned the "Academy" mentioned in Star Wars into an Imperial Academy. The dialog doesn't support that idea at all.

Here's a slightly truncated portion of the cut Biggs scene as it appeared in the script. I've highlighted the relevant parts:

LUKE: Look who's talking. Now that you've been around those giant starships you're beginning to sound like my uncle. You've gotten soft in the city...

BIGGS: I've missed you kid.

LUKE: Well, things haven't been the same since you left, Biggs. It's been so... quiet.

Biggs looks around then leans close to Luke.

BIGGS: Luke, I didn't come back just to say good-bye... I shouldn't tell you this, but you're the only one I can trust... and if I don't come back, I want somebody to know.

Luke's eyes are wide with Biggs' seriousness and loyalty.

LUKE: What are you talking about?

BIGGS: I made some friends at the Academy. (he whispers) ...when our frigate goes to one of the central systems, we're going to jump ship and join the Alliance...

Luke, amazed and stunned, is almost speechless.

LUKE: Join the Rebellion?! Are you kidding! How?

BIGGS: Quiet down will ya! You got a mouth bigger than a meteor crater!

LUKE: I'm sorry. I'm quiet. (he whispers) Listen how quiet I am. You can barely hear me...

Biggs shakes his head angrily and then continues.

BIGGS: My friend has a friend on Bestine who might help us make contact.

LUKE: You're crazy! You could wander around forever trying to find them.

BIGGS: I know it's a long shot, but if I don't find them I'll do what I can on my own... It's what we always talked about. Luke, I'm not going to wait for the Empire to draft me into service. The Rebellion is spreading and I want to be on the right side -- the side I believe in.

...................................................................................................................

LUKE: I wish I was going... Are you going to be around long?

BIGGS: No, I'm leaving in the morning...

LUKE: Then I guess I won't see you.

BIGGS: Maybe someday... I'll keep a lookout.

LUKE: Well, I'll be at the Academy next season... after that who knows. I won't be drafted into the Imperial Starfleet that's for sure... Take care of yourself, you'll always be the best friend I've got.

So from this scene we learn that Biggs has been away in the big city (Mos Eisley?) at the Academy. An earlier portion I left out is that he received his commission and is the first mate aboard a ship. He fears being drafted into the Empire so he plans to jump ship and head to the planet Bestine where he hopes to find a Rebel contact. Now, if this was an Imperial Academy why would he be afraid of being drafted into the Empire if he'd already joined it?

So what did the EU take away from all of this? That Biggs left Tatooine to join the Imperial Academy on Prefsbelt IV. And that Bestine is a small town on Tatooine. *face palm*

Yeah, growing up, even without having seen the deleted scenes, I always figured the Academy was a civilian thing that the Empire drafted from.

Had it been an Imperial Academy, I would have thought that they would have referred to it as such.

Screw lightsabers, I’ll stick with regular swords. At least they won’t blow up in my face like this franchise has.

Well from what Biggs says, that's almost the case. He makes it seem inevitable that he'll be drafted if he doesn't jump ship.

Since it seems like the Empire likes to pull from them, it's likely that it offers something similar to military training (also considering the Rand Ecliptic is a frigate which is a military class), which makes it likely that academies are set up by local governments as police or militia forces for local system security or something similar.

How the EU violates Occam's Razor at every oppertunity and makes things as complicated, convoluted, and confusing as it can.

Author

I don't understand why would anyone be bothered by "imperial academy". An adjective "imperial" added to "academy" doesn't change anything at all. The Empire governed the galaxy and pretty much everything could be called "imperial".

It is the adjective "military" that would actually make the difference you are complaining about.

Because the EU has turned what was basically just a flight school into a full blown naval academy where Biggs becomes an actual Imperial officer assigned aboard a Star Destroyer.

Biggs hated the Empire with a passion and so it makes no sense whatsoever.

Overall I hate most of the EU. It's a convoluted mess that serves nobody but second rate writers looking for their next pay check.

The only EU I take into account are the KoToR games, the Thrawn novels and then the Jedi Knight games.

I'm currently working on writing KoToR 3, exploring the 'ancient times' which is a complete rewrite of Marka Ragnos and the Great Hyperspace war, setting it a few thousand years after the fall of the Rakataka and the Infinite Empire. I'd also incorporate and rewrite the origins of the Valley of the Jedi, linking it to the threat that Revan went off into the unknown regions to fight. This will all in turn link in to my prequel rewrite.

You might find it interesting that at one point during the development of the NJO book series the Yuuzhan Vong were supposed to be a Sith Empire that was older than the Republic. NJO was also supposed to be a comic series instead of a novel series at this point.

I hate how all the cool mysteries are destroyed with explanations. Dagobah cave? Explained by a Dark Jedi dying there. Origin of the Sith? So over-explained that the Sith aren't cool anymore. Planet biomes? Explained by precursor races and Sith wars.
