For $599 we could get a Technicolor print of Fantasia with magnetic sound. I’m not sure whether it has the deleted scenes, but the quality would at least be miles ahead of the BD (no degraining). Anyone interested? If we could do another fundraiser I’d love to see this film properly preserved.

No, it was bought by someone else. But it didn't have deleted scenes anyway, so it could be worse.

I had deposits down on both prints, but before the scope print was pulled the print sold. He felt obligated to honor the ebay sale, so we missed out. However, I learned it was The '63 release and in scope, so it would not have had Sunflower and it would have been missing a lot of picture information.
I did get a chance to buy that 1982 Fantasia - a good thing since I really wanted a decent preservation of the '82 release and was going to be forced to have the reconstruction that I was working on as my only option. I'm looking forward to that one, because it has the original mag soundtrack, so I'll be able to get the authentic mix. Also, it was quite a bit less, and I didn't have too many people step forward with donations so it was going to be all out of pocket! :)
Anyway, I think we did OK. In a way I'm glad we didn't get the scope one, and I've talked to the guy and may have a lead on some 70mm stuff, so we'll see...
Was the seller able to confirm no Sunflower? The IMDB claims she wasn't cut until the late 60's. (Yes, I know, grain of salt.) The scope would have been interesting to see since there have been claims Walt was pondering a widescreen version in 1940.
Glad you scored the 1982 version. I got hit with some unexpected bills, so things are unfortunately tight for me at the moment. If a THX 1138 print pops up now, I'm boned.

I was working on the 1982 cut myself, I just had too many problems. It was a struggle to line up the 1990 LD audio with the Blu Ray, along with the 1982 cut. The 1982 tracks are easy to add, I just really wanted the original Deems Taylor. My computer can't really handle the load. I can edit, but my PC won't allow me to do anything precise. If you need the 1990 LD audio in case you have any errors, I still have them in.
I'm dying to hear the old mono mix of the audio, but Disney felt that Fantasound was the only audio that needed to be preserved.

I've actually done a little digging, and it appears that the 1957 release of the soundtrack....
...Doesn't suffer from the same problems as later releases. I've listened to rips of this old stereo release, and I have to say, if somebody managed to get a hold of a clean copy, the sound is very full. It doesn't have the overly scrubbed sound the home video releases have. In fact you can hear more of the instruments. The instruments all sound pretty good.
Some guy on youtube was working on a restoration of the film to bring back the true fantasound. He claimed he used this soundtrack and a mono mix (where he got that, I haven't a clue). He disappeared off the face of the earth, and his video on the process has been removed. I have it archived on my drive.
I'm sure there was some slight audio trickery involved in the soundtrack, because I hear subtle reverb, but then again, I've only heard the soundtrack scrubbed to death of any high frequencies. It was common practice in the 50's to electronically reprocess sounds and they'd also add reverb to fake stereo. It doesn't sound that extreme.

Didn't they transfer the Fantasound masters over to more normal recording gear around that time?
That album was released on reel to reel, so it might be a better option than vinyl for a preservation.

Yeah, I knew about the reel to reel, I just never could find it at the right time. I'd love to get a reel to reel player. It would definitely be a much better option.
What I hear in the vinyl rip of it, horrible bitrate and static included, still sounds much more natural. I found myself, after giving a proper RIAA curve, enjoying the recording as a listener for once. You can literally hear the tugging of the bow over the strings and the vibrations in the horns. The celeste in the nutcracker actually has a metallic strike to it. All of those little nuances are gone in the LD - Blu Ray releases. The guy who recorded the vinyl, obviously didn't have very good gear. If somebody with a reel to reel player could do it, or I could get a hold of one of those sealed vinyl releases using my good turntable, I could see a darn good restoration of the sound.
Disney is always worried about the restoration from a film standpoint, when they really need to do it from a musical standpoint.

There's a torrent of the vinyl rip made in 24/96 FLAC, but it doesn't have any seeders, so I only have 98.9% of it.
The missing percent is 18MB, which means a couple of seconds are missing from most of the tracks.
The Nutcracker Suite, Night on a Bald Mountain and Ave Maria are complete though.
I have reel-to-reel transfer gear if anyone can get the tapes.

I search every other day for a reel to reel copy, and haven't seen a single one. I haven't even seen anybody talking about preserving their copy. It's like people buy them just to have them. I wish the guy who was restoring the soundtrack on youtube hadn't disappeared. Maybe Disney got him.

Sorry, I've been mainly posting updates on AMPS, and not here... Let me do a quick recap.
There were two prints on ebay - one Tech and the other the '82 version. I was supposed to have deposits on both, but the Tech one wound up selling out from under me. I still had a deposit on the '82 copy, and was all set to finish the purchase when he told me that two of the reels were stolen at a garage sale. I asked if I could buy the remaining reels at a pretty decent price and he replied that in his opinion the print was unsaleable. Anyway, that's what happened so far. We may have a lead on another print, but you'll have to read about that at AMPS (for security's sake)... :)
