Oh, there's no doubt that there's good fanfiction out there; the Dark Emperor series by Brendon J. Wahlberg, for example, is one of the best Star Wars stories I've ever read and is a whole lot better than most of the published EU stuff. The good fanfic, unfortunately, seems to be heavily overshadowed by the stuff written by semi-literate teenage girls.
