Help Wanted: Does anyone have The Good, Bad & Ugly laserdisc audio? — Page 3

I'm planning when I get this one, to recut it in final cut so that it conforms to the international cut. Unless someone wants to do it of course. I can't watch this horrible fan cut anymore.

I think the yellow tint is due to the negative having deteriorated. Italian versions of the first two look about the same.

The 2014 MGM BD (top) does not have a vertical-flip effect that is present on the Mondo (bottom).

It also *seems* to lack a splash effect.

EDIT:  Actually, it does have the splash: it's just that this shot is edited differently between the two BDs: the splash occurs later in the 2014 BD despite the fact that the shot lasts almost exactly the same number of frames.

WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY THINKING?

Looks like we have our work seriously cut out for us. IIRC the Mondo derived from an Italian restoration sponsored by the Leone family. It always seemed about as close as we had gotten to the original film on video.

The detail is in the new MGM 4K edition but damn, what were they thinking? GBU has never looked like that. I don't even think a IB print would be that oversaturated. And the color cast is just all wrong.

Can't believe Fistful has a new restoration. The Italian BD and 35mm print that has been around in the last few years were from an Italian restoration from the negative, an the new print was beyond gorgeous and completely mindblowing in fine details. (The scene of Ramon's reveal to Joe at the Rojo's table really shows off the white bits that are floating in the air.)

That outtake reel was incredible.

Can anyone point me to, or suggest search terms, to find HD video of the shorter cut with English audio? Any one of the variations discussed here will do. I'm getting very sick of the extended version I have.

How is your project going Lil Brutto/eurospec19? Would love to check it out when its finished!

I held off on completing my project until the release of the 4K. Now that I have it in hand I'm going to proceed with a regrade to scale back the excess yellow/teal. If the 4K regrade is superior to the Mondo (that I've already used) then I will have to revise my project accordingly.

Stay tuned!

screw pavtube... i highly recommend using adobe media encoder if your bd-video is mpeg2 or avc. results are far better. you'll also use the proper prores codecs and not the ffmpeg stuff, which can result in shitty playback within final cut (7 & x).

Thanks for the tip. The computer I was using crapped out and I no longer have pavtube. I'll use adobe media encoder this time around.

I'm glad to hear that i'm not the only one planning to attempt to remove the yellow on this 4k remaster. Very much looking forward to seeing how you go about regrading this Lil Brutto.

Are you planning to use any source in particular as a colour reference?

Hi kk,

This is eurospec19 from bluray forum. Actually, I plan to use your screenshots and/or the Mondo BD as a colour reference. I posted a question over at bluray forum directed at you asking what settings you used to regrade your screenshots, which looked great to me. I won't be using the same software as you. Instead I'll use the colour correct function in FCP7. I'm not experienced with colour correction but I came across several youtube vids and "how to" links during my online search for more info. Trial and error at this point.

You mentioned in another thread that it was a blanket yellow applied to the entire film and that the same regrade setting could be used. Is that still the case?

Here's a very quick regrade I just did to remove the yellow tint, the screen comparison between the 2014 blu-ray and the regrade can be seen below:

Did you boost the brightness as well? It appears to be more than simply removing the yellow. Looks a bit off on my screen. Probably just me.

That looks good. I'm pleased to see that there is definitely potential for a proper regrade.

I'd like to see the same screenshot from the italian Mondo BD; thanks!

After comparing it looks like kk650's regrade is nearly spot on with the Mondo BD:

Don't know where this link come from - not from this thread; to me, this seems not a regrade, but just two near frames from the same source; indeed, you could note that 2014 MGM and 2009 Mondo have different cropping, as you can see in the first link and not in this one...

I made that comparison using kk650's regraded frame and a VLC snapshot of the 2009 Mondo image sourced from a 25GB mkv I have stored on my laptop. It was too difficult to get the exact same frame. I cropped both images to the same frame size before uploading.

They do appear to be from the same source, don't they?

So is this going to be just a color regrade or will it also be edited to match the theatrical version with the extended editions removed?

I'm sorry Lil Brutto, but you have made a mistake... the frame used for that comparison is not from kk650 regrade - at least, not from the link he posted in this thread: http://www.screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/74870

Here you are the two frames (untouched), one after the other:

This is not because I don't like kk650's work; at the contrary, we are good friends, and I admire his work as much as he admires mine, and I'm sure he will confirm the comparison you made has not used his regraded frame.

However, if you have taken the regraded frame from another screenshot comparison, I apologize, and I kindly ask you to post the link of that one.

Indeed, I made a mistake. Sorry about that.

The "regrade" that has now been confirmed to be a Mondo screenshot seemed to have been modified much more than simply removing the yellow hue. Hence, my question to kk650 in post #60 above. I'm not sure from where I got the Mondo screenshot; probably another forum. That definitely explains why the images I linked to in post #65 appear to be from the same source...because they are!

Thanks for catching this. I will delete the screenshot comparison in post #65 to avoid any further confusion.

I have the Mondo so i'll grab a screen shot.

Lil Brutto don't worry, it happens! I make mistakes too, but thanks to this forum's users, that find any single one, I'm able to fix them ASAP.

I think someone should start a new thread with a subject like "GBU regrading" or something like this, just to not derail this thread further.

So are there any ongoing projects working to regrade the 4K version?  Original mono audio as well?

Currently watching the Mondo and it looks great in my opinion, the 4K has nice detail but I'm really having a hard time with the overly yellow look.
