EXORCIST II : THE HERETIC, SPECIAL EDITION [Blu-Ray 2.0]
119’ Director’s Cut | 103’ Theatrical Cut | & bonus features [HD remasters | Full Blu-Ray | BD-50]

This new 2.0 release of The Heretic features two different cuts of John Boorman’s most disreputed film, reconstructed using true HD sources, and presented alongside almost 2 hours of bonus material.

ORIGINAL DIRECTOR’S CUT [HD 1080p]
This full-length, original director’s cut was only shown in theaters for a couple of days when the film premiered, before being recut due to negative audience reaction. It was never released on VHS, LD or DVD or BD.
Runtime : 01:58:46
Video : AVC1 | 1920x1080 | 1.78:1 original A.R. | 23.97fps | 20.000 kb/s.
Audio 1 : English | original mono mix 1977 | LPCM 1.0 | 768 kb/s.
Audio 2 : English | remastered mono mix 2014 | LPCM 1.0 | 768 kb/s.
Audio 3 : English | new DTS 5.1 mix 2014 | LPCM 5.1 | 1.536 mb/s.
Subtitles : English, French.

THEATRICAL CUT [HD 1080p]
This version runs 15 minutes shorter than the original director’s cut. It was recut by John Boorman the day after the premiere of the film, and was released in theaters worldwide, then on VHS. This was the only version of The Heretic available for more than 15 years. It then completely vanished when the film was released in a different cut, first on the VHS re-edition in 1993, then on DVD in 2002. Although this rare theatrical cut misses many scenes, it also features some additional footage exclusive to this version. Some scenes are ordered differently. It includes an added flashback scene, stock footage of Regan as the demon, extra gore, and a different ending. Some of the music and sound effects are also noticably different.
Runtime : 01:43:05
Video : AVC1 | 1920x1080 | 1.85:1 original A.R. | 23.97fps | 20.000 kb/s.
Audio 1 : English | original mono mix 1977 | LPCM 1.0 | 768 kb/s.
Audio 2 : French | original dub 1977 | LPCM 1.0 | 768 kb/s.

Reconstructed using true HD sources  awesome! Where did you find hd for this?

This is wonderfully grand release for a strange sequel of the odd-bent with grandiose composure. Thank you kindly.

Has anyone burned this yet?  When I go to burn the disk it states that it's too big for a 50gb Bd-r.  The image size shows up as 50,323mb with the disk size being 47,732MB.  Anyone else have this problem?

Wait, what's your source for the director's cut?

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

So I was finally able to get this burned late Sunday night, but I'm just getting over the flu from this past weekend so I haven't had a chance to write up a full review of the project  just yet, but thought I'd highlight an important issue.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but this project will not fit onto a 50gb bd-r in its current state.  Using imgburn to calculate the file size, with the bd-rom content the project sits at 105% normal capacity.  With the bd-rom content removed it sits at 104% normal capacity, so in order for this disk to work something must go.  I had to rebuild the project after cutting out the French audio track.  With only that language option removed and no other content, I filled 96% of the disk and the project worked.

I hope to have a more thourough review this weekend, but for now, people interested in this project will need to rebuild it without 1 of the audio tracks for it to work.

Now that is great authoring, can you tell me is there a docsap intro on this project to during the opening credits of the films? if so between the authoring and this, if it is there, I guess I will pass.

Upon starting each version of the film you're greeted to a Warner bros logo, then a docsap logo, and then the film starts.  I found it to be unobtrusive, but it the purest sense I can understand why someone wouldn't care for it to be there.

Thank you for the answer, I can save my bandwidth, I really, really hate when people do this, you will never, ever see us do this on our releases.

Thanks again

A really great job! Thank you for this and your other releases!

Thanks for your comments - and the other nice ones  ;-)

The film is HD-sourced from the uncompressed Vudu HDX streams.

Are the two trailers remastered as well in HD?

Nop, the 2 trailers are SD upscales, only the new trailer is HD-sourced.
The rest of the special features are from a multitude of sources, SD and HD.

Regarding the BD's size:

I'm not sure how to explain this - One other person has reported this issue, while others, me included, have burned the BD-50 in full without any problem.  Can this be a case of overburn-capacity? In any case, if your burner doesn't support the BD folder as such, either remove the French dub from the Theatrical cut or put the whole thing in BDRebuilder to have it recompressed - sorry about the inconvenient but I have no clue what is causing this.

As for the last, majorly douchey comment by Dark-jedi : FYI, There is absolutely nothing wrong with putting a logo before the film starts at all - it's completely outside of the film, and completely unobstrusive. Your comment is both unnecessary and rather transparent: You might as well have added that you can pee 2 feet further than anyone else in the class, claimed that your mother bought your nicer clothes, stick out your tongue and throw your lolly on the ground.

Initially I thought it may have been my disks available space, but after googling around for some time, most of the data I could find pointed that my disk size was considered normal for a 50gb disk.  I'm glad to finally hear from someone else though that it does fit if you''re a bit lucky.

For what it's worth, removing the French track and the time it took was a very small price to pay for an otherwise stellar package.  I'm very gratefull for the release and really only have 2 negative points to mention in my review thus far... One being the problems getting it burned, the other being an ever so small oversight that doesn't effect the enjoyment of the project in anyway, but is quite glaring.  Namely, when the disk is inserted into my blu Ray player, instead of saying The project title, "The Exorcist II SE" it instead lists "multiavchd-dc...".

I haven't yet had a chance to review the 2 cuts of the films, but I skimmed through the special features and films a bit, watching and listening at sporadic moments and found everything to look and sound quite good.  My hope is to give the disk the full time and energy it deserves this weekend for a more proper review, but at a quick glance I would still HIGHLY RECOMMEND the download to everyone.  I can easily state that we will never get a release with as many quirky extras officially.  Thanks again docsap, it may not please everyone, but so far I'm impressed.

Maybe I am one of the few who understand where DJ is coming from as none of the material being restored/fixed/adjusted/ and such is the property of the person doing the archive/restoration and putting a personal logo on such a project kinda makes it look like that person is laying claim that it's their property.

I believe ADM did some similar stuff with personal logos prior to movie start which I found disappointing.

Now if there is something in the menu leading to a spot regarding "about this restoration", that would seem more reasonable place to identify ones self and what they put in to the project and why.

In the end, it's not a douchey comment unless one feels their ownership of the project through such means is justified even though they don't own the source material.

OK, so I'm gonna tell you my experience while trying to burn this disc.

I had the same problem as TripleHBK. The project was way over the disc size (46,6 GB, around 50.000.000.000 bytes). I have a 2013 Pioneer burner ready for BDXL, and the media was TDK.

Anyway, I asked him about how to remove the french track, as that was the solution he had tried.

He recommended BD Rebuilder. It's a nice soft, but it has a problem. It recompresses the video. No matter what you do. It allows you to leave audio tracks intact, but there's recompression with the video ones.

So I googled a little and found DBFix. It's not a free soft, but the trial version let's you do some things... and deleting audio/video tracks is one of them.

It doesn't perform any kind of reencode. It just demuxes the selected video and remuxes it without the audio/video you want.

I deleted the french track from the second cut, but it still didn't fit. Since the trial version doesn't tell you the size of the final project (you have to pay for that), I just kept on deleting things and building the project until the size was right.

After a lot of time (and I mean A LOT), I finally managed to make it fit. It took 99% of my BD-R space (46,4 GB).

I didn't want to lose any video feature, so I had to sacrifice audio streams.

This is what had to go in order to fit it without recompression:

* Theatrical Cut's french track.

* Photo gallery audio track.

* Essay audio track.

* Different versions audio track.

* All menus audio tracks.

It's really a pity, but I thought it was better to lose some music than a whole feature.

I burned it and it plays perfectly fine.

Doc, you did a great work with this one. Every little bit is very nicelly done.

Thanks!

Not true at all! you are not setting it correctly, but it is to bad you guys have to do this to begin with lol, go into the settings and check custom size and then set it to a 50 GB BD, simple.

DJ is correct.  BD Rebuilder will not compress the video below your specifications if you set it properly.  It's a great program that has salvaged many problematic encodes.  Highly recommended.

Dark, Flexi, I did exactly that, I swear, and the log showed "encoding video" or "recoding video" or something similar.

The estimated time to perform the task (to delete one audio stream) was 3+ hours, and that's close to what TripleHBK told me this same process took for him.

Too much time for a demuxing/remuxing process of one video, don't you think?

The other soft I mentioned takes around... I don't know (didn't check it)... but around 10 minutes to demux/remux the selected video and maybe another 10 to copy the rest of the structure to the selected location.

Anyway, you are more experienced on this for sure. Just pointing what I noticed.

Dark, I love your projects and those of Doc. I don't think an authoring issue (it really is a size issue and apparently doesn't happen to all of us) is something to criticise anybody about.

I mean, you do an amazing effort to create this great preservations and you are kind enough to share them with us, so I can only be grateful. It's better to have this issues (they are not that common, anyway) than not having the preservation in the first place.

By the way, you should download this one. Doc's logo doesn't bother at all. When you start the movie, you see a modern WB logo, then Doc's, and then the movie starts with the old flat WB logo. So Doc's is completely out of the movie. Yes, you have to go through it to watch the movie, but it's just 2 seconds.

Thanks! :)

Yes, it takes three hours... but so does a good roast.
