Original Trilogy Extended Edition (* unfinished project * - lots of deleted scene info*)

 (Edited)

I’m trying to make an “Ultimate Edition” of Star Wars IV V VI. With the release of the deleted scenes released on Blu-Ray and Harmy’s Despecialized Editions, I want to make an HD, Extended, Fully Restored version of the Theatrical Star Wars Trilogy (Plus The Star Wars Holiday Special). I’m a little new to most of this and will try my best but need some help.

My process of restoring the footage is slow and is essentially doing a frame-by-frame clean up and coloring of the scenes in Adobe PhotoShop, Simply by using the Clone Stamp Tool, Sharpen, and De-Graining Tools. Is there a better more efficient way to do any of this? My computer can definitely handle this.

For cleaner audio I will basically use the Star Wars Radio Drama if I can.

To make it HD is the biggest problem. Is it even possible? If so, how? I would like this to be more of a hobby I do in my freetime, so it would be nice if these techniques were free or cheap.

Some of the other issues I have is what to do with the Jabba the Hutt scene in IV (Since this is still supposed to be “George Lucas Free”) and any incomplete effects shots (such as Luke when he almost runs the lady over in IV) should I exclude these shots, try to finish them, or include them as is. For the Jabba Scene I was probably going to use the un-edited scene with the fat stand in in the fur (the alternative would be a stop motion Jabba since that was Lucas’ original plan).

I would love input and help. If there is any resources you guys might think I’d find useful, feel free. Like I said, this will be a leisure hobby, so don’t expect too much (at least for now). I’m busy with lots of other things, so it’ll happen when it happens.

Thanks in advance.

The fat "stand-in" was actor Declan Mulholland and he was never meant as a stand-in for a planned stop-motion effect despite what Lucas says nowadays. He was meant to be the real Jabba in the original film before the scene was cut. See Kaminski's great article on the subject: http://secrethistoryofstarwars.com/jabba.html

Also keep in mind that had the scene not been cut, the scene with Greedo had also been slightly different in terms of dialogue.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Thanks for the info. So this means that I will use the unaltered scene, instead of any other option. Again, information like this is helpful, thanks.

The problem is that the original cut scene has never been released (except for bits and pieces in various documentaries) and it's very unlikely it ever will be as the footage is now part of the SE. Attempts have been made to restore the scene but I'm afraid it's not in the quality to be presentable in an edit of the film as far as I know.

I only wanted to point this out as it is a very common misconception, it's also very likely Declan Mulholland had been dubbed by another actor had the scene been kept due to his thick accent.

I wish you good luck with your project, it's a cool idea. I'm sure there are many members around here who are able and willing to help you out.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Thanks for that. Ever since I saw (some of) the original footage, with Declan in full costume, I was quite suspicious of this. The fact that it was not filmed in the manner one would expect for effects is a good point as well. But the complete lack of evidence of any planning for an effect shot, or the intended character (despite evidence of costume design for Declan) seals the deal.

I think an extended version could do without this scene for various reasons mentioned: no decent quality version of the entire thing, repeated identical lines from Greedo scene, hyper-discontinuity with RoTJ.

Well of course, that's a given. :) Although I was wondering if I should maybe go back and make his lightsaber blue and name this version "Revenge of the Jedi" for more of that true originality but not true to the theatrical version.

If I can't find (or piece together) the original scene I might be forced to leave it out, otherwise I'll include it, for the sake of it being as "extended" as possible.

Wow.  I hadn't thought that LFL was lying in this case.  I thought they had intended to use SFX for Jabba.  But you won't need to piece it together.  It's available on Star Wars Begins and Deleted Magic: Revisisted.  With permission, you should be allowed to borrow their work.  I doubt they'd mind.

Hey, I have a few questions about the GOUT upscale with Harmy's DSE. Did they just enlarge the frame so it matches the size of the Blu-ray footage or is there something else they did? If they did something else besides making the frame bigger, what was it and how can I do it? I want to know so I can upscale the Deleted Scenes.

They changed the lightsaber color to green because it blended with the blue background on the sand barge.  For good reason too, the blue saber didn't stand out.

I heard about that two but I was just wondering about that idea, and what you guys would think about it.

I cleaned up two frames, they're not perfect (they only took about five minutes) These are from a quick google search. I'm still waiting for a few resources and some other thing to come together (like software). I just used the clone tool to clean it up, may not be perfect but its fast, I have seen another way of doing it and I'll try it out once I get my software, but it takes around 30 min per frame, which is incredibly tedious.

That looks pretty damn good, considering how poor it looked originally. Very excited to follow the progress of this project!

There are a plethora of better tools than photoshop for this kind of work, that will make your life a truckload easier.

e.g. NukeX has a free trial (http://www.thefoundry.co.uk/products/nuke-product-family/nukex/trial/) or a Personal Edition which is free, and lets you learn the product.

Grab some paint tutorials and give it a go.

e.g. http://vimeo.com/12758392

or jump to the Paint and Roto section here:

Grab the PLE version below whilst learning, then you can use the 15 day trial once you are up to speed :)

I don't remember, I just Googled Star Wars Deleted Scenes and took two ones that I wanted to clean. I have a rip from the Blu-Rays that have the deleted scenes that I will use for the actual thing, and then a few BTS clips to have alternate or extended scenes.

I do plan on doing this, I've been busy since it is the end of the school year but I'm finishing up this week then I will start, I have everything that I need but my computer is also old and may not handle this well but I will try, I plan on getting a new computer soon and that will speed thing up a bit.

I also think I will use after effects since I know how to use it and then realized there is a clone stamp tool, that will make things eaisier.

But I am really sorry for the delay, I really can't wait to get this really going.

I'm having trouble importing avi footage into after effects. I've tried using Mpeg Streamclip to convert it but it just shows black is there any way to import this I use a Mac. The Avi footage is the main deleted scenes ripped from the blu-rays.

I need some help.
