Having Wedge in the ST isn't universe shrinking. If they were to reveal that death sticks guy from AOTC had since cleaned up his act and was a high ranking officer in the New Republic, THAT's universe shrinkage.

Wedge played an integral part in the Galactic Civil War and was there every step of the way with Luke and the rest of them. So it's completely within reason that he could still be around in some capacity.
