I love the original japanese films and i thought Devlin and Emerich did a good job with their 1998 remake. I never understood what the hell people had against it--HELLO, its Godzilla! Compared to the other films in the series it had the smartest plot, deepest-developed characters and the most thrilling action. I'm convinced that every critic of this film has never seen an actual Godzilla film.
This post is full of what.
The Emmerich Godzilla or GINO(Godzilla In Name Only) is a decent monster movie. But it is not in any way a Godzilla film.
Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich used a Japanese kaiju to create an homage to the American monster movie. It's basically a bland remake of The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms.
I love that film, it's a classic that yes inspired Tomoyuki Tanaka to create Godzilla in the first place.
BUT, Godzilla and the films that followed are a genre onto their own. To make a generic monster movie and then slap Godzilla's name on it is an enormous disservice to the character. His ultimate fate was well deserved.
