I fell to the Dark Side but Redeemed Myself (2004 OT DVD)

Well, after making the mistake of buying the dvd set and going through three sets due to defective discs, I now have store credit at CompUsa. I mainly wanted the set for the 4th disc and was willing to keep it had it not been for two bad ANH disc and one bad Jedi disc. I don’t feel that I should have to go buy a new dvd player to watch these movies (I have a two year old Samsung Progressive Scan player).

Hopefully my laserdisc player will never crap out!

You didn't need those dvds anyway. Cheers!

Ford, you had that many problems? That doesn't bode well for the masses. I wonder how many people have purchased the sets and just haven't gotten around to watching it all yet and will realize they have problems after the sets are pulled at the end of the year (if that is still, indeed, LFL's plan).

Sorry you had to go through all that, Ford. But, as you said, you are now redeemed. Use that credit to buy Star Wars: Battlefront.

Yep. After my first set I read about the issue with ANH on thedigitalbits.com. I had not read anything about problems with the Jedi disc but I had one. I even tried running the laser lens disc on my player and also tried the discs in my PS2 and Xbox.

I like Battlefront but there are three games that I really want: Bloodrayne II, Halo 2 and maybe GTA:San Andreas.

Anyone know if you can order a copy of the bonus disc from the dvd set?

Hey Bossk, have you played Battlefront? If so, is it any good? Before I shell out mo' money I'd like to know. There is no demo available for PC and I don't have XboX.

Wow. That many DVDs? That sucks. Thankfully, my set works fine.

So far there is no real way to get the bonus disc other than buying the DVD set. It's never going to be sold in bricks and mortar or legitimate online e-tailers by itself. Lucas won't make it available that way. May someone on eBay will sell it seperately or you'd have to go bootleg, but not from this site since that is something available for sale.

My brother is getting San Andreas at the end of this week. Can't wait to see what that one looks like.

I haven't played Battlefront, yet. But I've heard nothing but rave reviews of it and if there is any one game I would buy (if I had time to play and money to burn), it would be this one... Always wanted a good game to get in a snowspeeder fight against AT-ATs.

What are you talking about, Bossk?

Nearly every good Starwars game has had a Hoth speeder level. Takin' down At-ats, four legs at a time.

Perhaps he was being sarcastic. After all, how many hoth levels HAVE there been?

I'm a PS2 gamer, not a PC. So I haven't been playing ANY Star Wars games since the mid 90s with X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter (the last PC game I've played). None of the games that have come out so far on PS2 have interested me. So, for me, this is the first Hoth battle game. Had I known that all these other games had the opportunity to battle in Hoth, I may have checked them out. But none of them made it clear enough for me (this one shows it right there in the commercial; can't get much clearer than that). Besides, I think with Battlefront, you can go directly to where you want to fight instead of having to go through levels to get there. Or, perhaps I'm mistaken. As I said, I haven't picked it up yet.

I'm a very amateur gamer. I know nothing about it and have never played any multiplayer games over the net on my computer. Never been much for computer gaming simply because it takes too much time and I don't like to sit on a computer at home when I've been on a computer for 9 hours a day at work. I don't even turn on computers at night or on weekends unless I absolutely have to. Just how I am.

The problem with Battlefron is that, while the engine is good, and the mechanics of the game are good, LEC rushed Pandemic to release the thing in conjunction with the damn DVDs. SOOOOOOoooo, what you end up with is a well built game, which lacks every single thing which would make it replayable beyond a couple of days. You cannot alter the conditions of play, the length of games, pit Empire against CIS, rebel against Republic, etc, etc. There's also no strategy involved in the game AT ALL. There's no reason to capture and hold command points, as EVERY game devolves into a deathmatch, usually centered on vehicles. IF LEC and Pandemic get off their asses and release the SDK, the game will be a fantastic play, and enormously rewarding. In its current state, I'd say rent it for a couple of nights.

Everything that Zim said is true, and he left out the most important part for Bossk.

You have to unlock the Hoth level.

I've been waiting for Hollywood Video to have a copy in(I have an unlimited pass, so it's basically free). I decided to "grab" the PC version, and while I liked it, it got rather monotonous. While it was cool to be the Empire at Hoth, the Hoth level was rediculously hard. I couldn't down a single walker. If you are an AT-AT, you get taken down immediately. If's ok for a while, but it's hardly a great game. Plus, I remember the interviews for it implying that you could change the course of battle(i.e. the story). What they meant was that the AI was so dumb, it really is up to you. Plus, you'd think loosing Hoth as the Rebellion wouldn't end the game, since that's what's supposed to happen. Fortunately, KotOR II looks sweeter by the day. Not only can you turn the Dark side, you can convert your friends as well, and it sounds like the games vastly different through that choice, not just the ending.

Update:

Before I decided to return the set to Compusa, I had called the 800 for Fox about the problem I was having. They had took my information and said a replacement disc would be sent. After I decided to get my money back, I called them again and left a message telling them I had returned the set and not send me a new Ep IV disc. Well, guess they didn't get the message because I received a new copy of the EP IV disc in the mail Monday. I'll keep it unless Blockbuster or some other store will give me a decent amount of trade credit.

In regards to the Bonus Disc, I got one for 5 dollars on ebay. There's a pretty steady stream there.

In regards to Battlefront, I heard the same thing that the AI is incredibly stupid and makes the one player game monotonous. On top of that, you switch sides halfway through the one player campaigns, so that you follow the storyline... doesn't bode well for it.

However, the multiplayer is supposed to be great. On one xbox you can only play four people, and the AI is still (surprise) incredibly stupid, so you really need xbox live or an in house network, but if you can get 8 to 16 people, the game rocks.

I don't have 8-16 people...

Bottom line is that this title was too ambitious for the hardware, which can't support battles on this scale. Hopefully there will be a sequel on the next generation consoles that will do the concept justice. So rent this one before you invest.

Listen, if you want a good star wars game along the lines of Battlefront, buy Battlefield 1942 and then get the Galactic Conquest mod (www.galactic-conquest.net). It was also made by Pandemic studios and may not be as polished as Battlefront seems to be, it is still pretty fun.
