Lake Mungo (2008).

In some ways a superior entry into the found footage genre.

It's made in a faux documentary style so the found footage is mixed with positioned camera footage of the 'interviews' inter-cut with still images.

This makes the piece feel less contrived than most of it's cousins as it dispenses with the need for the characters to carry a camera with them at all times.

What starts off as essentially a ghost story gains a mild Twin Peaks style complication to it's plot some way in but it stays at a very slow and deliberate pace which might bore some viewers. It kept my attention going but it never got anything more than sort of interesting.

It could really have done with more work.

The documentary maker and his crew are barely featured at all (you would be forgiven for forgetting they are even mentioned). If it had a Jon Ronson type character prompting some of the characters and driving the narrative and if a couple of the characters had been taken to book for what they did it would have made a very good film indeed.

As it is 2 balls.
