It allows you to check to make sure a file you downloaded is exactly what it was supposed to be. It involves the creator creating and posting a hash of the contents of the file, which they then share and you have to create a hash using the same program and make sure it matches.

MD5 file contain hashes
MDS file contain layer-break position for burning software
