Yep. Congress just passed new laws. You can't back up anything you own anymore, the way the new laws are worded, even though that is illegal according to other laws (I believe). It is one big snafu. The lobbyists finally got through to some people, and Sen. Orin Hatch had something happen to him, I forget what exactly, that caused him to switch his beliefs, and he was one of the people that got the darn thing pushed through.

It is illegal to back up CDs, DVDs, rip anything from a disc (even for your own private, personal use), etc.




^ That would seem to be quite a difficult law to monitor and enforce.

Thankfully the laws in the UK allow for transference from one storage media to another - ONLY as a backup for the person who has purchased/owns the disc, tape, dvd or whatever format - of course.

This makes the case of the 28 people the BPI (British music industry PTB) are suing for downloading tracks off p2p programs a little more complex - if they have bought/own a music track or album of the downloaded material (unlikely, but possible) then I don't think they can be prosecuted...
