No, you don't. And there are plenty of characters who are bad guys in Star Wars who neither turn to the dark side or join the Sith. But joining the dark side is equivalent to becoming a Sith; that's what crossing over to the dark side means.
So, if you hate that concept, chances are it's because you don't understand it, maybe?
