The Standalone Star Wars Films

So we've been hearing murmurs about these for a while now. Today, Bob Iger revealed to investors that they currently have three standalone films in the works.

They're set to release in-between the episodic entries. The rumored release schedule looks something like this:

2015: VII

2016: Standalone "???" directed by Gareth Edwards

2017: VIII

2018: Standalone "???" directed by Josh Trank

2019: IX

2020: Standalone "???"

We know Lawrence Kasdan is writing one of the scripts, while Simon Kinberg is writing another. So who's writing the third?

What do you think these standalone films will be about?

Boba Fett for sure. Maybe a young Han Solo movie, as they can use the recreated Falcon set pieces for that. A live action Droids movie? Disney will ponder an Ewoks flick for the merchandising angle alone. ;)

Thankfully, we aren't going to have to wait three years between episodes, I'm not getting any younger!

I agree.  Fett and Solo are givens.  Both had lives and adventures long before we first met them. It will be very easy to move them out of the main timeline and give them one-of films.  I'd be shocked if they aren't two of the three.  Not sure about a third.  Ewoks for sure if one of the three films is for children. Beyond that, I'm not well versed in the franchise after the first two films.

I've heard Yoda - let's hope that's not true.

I personally want (and maybe I've said something like this before in the Star Wars spin-offs thread) a Ben Kenobi and Owen Lars team up film where they slash and punch, respectively, Tusken raiders to bits in the vein of The Searchers and other Western classics.

I'd like to see some films that think outside the typical Star Wars box, but I have little faith that anyone working for Disney has the gumption/influence to take the initiative.

A Hutt movie would be interesting (focusing on Jabba, but not limiting itself to him), but I doubt they'd do that, unfortunately. According to the EU, Jabba is something like 900 years old (either that, or that's a Hutt's maximum lifespan) at the time of ROTJ, so he'd have plenty of backstory to be explored.

How young are you thinking? - because the ship did belong to Lando at some point.

I'd be interested if they [Han / Lando / et al] were portrayed as drug runners and gamblers rather than heroes / 'good' guys..

A movie about the forming of the rebel alliance seems unlikely given the new TV series coming out.

What are the chances that some of the movies will be animated?

Are Ford, Fisher and Hamill confirmed for multiple films or only Episode 7?

What are the chances of a BTTF2 style plot that weaves through an established film from a different angle? - Apparently the new Terminator film is going this route.

I understand that people love boba fett but I don't really think there's much you could do [now] with the character that would be meaningful.

We already know about his birth, his upbringing and his death.

Somebody mentioned a clone wars film using the PT cast, something like that could be fun if based on a decent script. Although we HAVE just had 6 years worth of Clone Wars story lines.

maybe something set in the old republic era?

Something new is what I want to see (but not entirely new--the species, locations, time period or something(s) has(/ve) to be familiar). I hope they go that direction. It's really impossible to say what they'll do, but I doubt any will have to do with the Clone Wars, rise of the Rebellion, Boba Fett (I think LFL & Disney probably know that many of us are sick of him by know--at least in the EU), Ewoks (they made two movies and a cartoon series already), etc.

I know the other thread would be better for this, but at this point I would like to see films about:

the Old Republic,

the Hutt Empire (with Jabba making an appearance at some point, if not being the main character),

and the history of the Trade Federation, Commerce Guild, and other commercial giants in the Star Wars universe.

Just kidding, I don't really know what I want from the third film yet. I'll have to think about it (maybe a space Pirates of the Caribbean?).

Because it's a bunch of Disney people working on and writing all the Marvel films, right?

I would have put "Hollywood" in place of "Disney", but I figured everyone's sick of hearing me bitch about Satan's crackhouse.

Anthony Ingruber is cast as young Harrison Ford in his upcoming movie (a very little role though I guess). Let's all hope he'll be cast as a young Han Solo if they make a movie with this character cause they will never find someone who looks and sound more Harrison Ford than him.

That is an awesome idea!  I'd prefer that over any ideas I've heard yet.

Being that Han Solo is my favorite character.  I am really hoping for a Han solo trilogy.

looking for HDTV of the  Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.  Also HDTV of The Lord of the Rings trilogy

That is an amazing photo. I thought it was an old shot of Harrison for a moment.

I would love too see the Brian Daley Han Solo books be adapted into movies. I think even Lando ought to get a movie. It could end with him losing the Falcon to Han of course. :)

Benjamin has already played young Harrison Ford in Blade Runner ;-)

VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.

Well it is very likely one of them will be about Han or/and Lando. Those characters were not touched by the PT so it leaves a lot of manoeuvring space. I must say that the idea of another actor playing Solo seems kinda bad to me.

Standard Star Wars film only explore a few planets. I hope these stand-alone films will give a considerable focus on locations and showing us as much of the galaxy as possible.

I'm ready for a Seven Samurai/Magnificent Seven type film set around seven Jedi. Hopefully set in the time of the Old Republic.

The movie theater is my church and my holy trinity is a Trilogy.

There's a Han Solo/Seven Samurai scenario they happen to own the rights to now. ;)

I think it makes more sense to do films that bridge or tie into the ST.

So if we get a Boba Fett film it should introduce a character that will play a role in the story of Episode VIII or something like that.

A suited Darth Vader chasing down Jedi film would make up for some of the stupidity of ROTS and could tie in with the Rebels series.

A smuggler story where a younger Han (I cringe at a Young Han film it's Harrison's role and there are other smugglers) makes a very brief cameo and where Chewie is a middle to major character would be doable.

They could make a sort of trilogy of their own with Vader using Bounty Hunters in his quest to track down surviving Jedi and the growing rebellion using smugglers to transport supplies to their base on Dantooine.

I'm hoping for some kind of parallel story, similar to the storyline of X-Wing Alliance. A look at some of the well known events from a different perspective, and of course, a lot of new locations.

I think the idea of a film about Yoda's early years was only ever a rumour and pre-dated the franchise being sold to Disney. That's how I seem to remember it, anyway.

I think I'm even less enamoured with the idea of the standalone films than I am with the new trilogy, sad to say.

That's some bad hat, Harry

A movie about Palpatine, no?

Would love to see stand alone movies that at some point cross the same timelines seen in the PT in specially key moments (this would only be possible with the PT, as the actors age still matches their looks by 2005). For instance, in a movie about Palpatine, we could see new personal angles for Anakin's fall and what happens with Windu in his office, etc.

It would be interesting to me at least, to have that overlapping of same situations in different films from different perspectives and serving different stories, like in the Saw saga

At this point I assume that the Rebels series is the same level of stupidity as PT. I would prefer they don't link it with OT/ST.

I assume it's more like The Clone Wars series but set before ANH so I really don't mind because on the whole TCW was as close to the OT as a PT project could be within family animated television show parameters.

But the PT is already linked with the OT/ST. Along with Rebels before it even debuts.
