Supernova (2000) [spoRv] *BD-25* RELEASED — Page 2

I used a lagarith "intermediate" version, to speed up the process, but x264 had some problems with few frames; so, now I'm encoding using directly the avisynth script; the problem is, it will take about 26 hours just for the 1st pass, and probably the same for the second pass... well, hope it will be ready before May...

As both HDTV versions are pixel perfect, what I did is to color grading the one with no logo in the image, then I took the "patch" (rectangular) from it and overlaid it to the residual logo of the other one; simple, eh?

The final encoding is on its way right now; if all will go well (touching wood) the final release will be today or tomorrow!

Wow, you can do that? Just take a "chunk" of the video and drop it into the other video seamlessly? That's amazing!

Well worth the wait. Thanks for caring about it enough to do what you have to for it to come out right.

Waiting for your feedbacks!

So I finally got an opportunity today to watch your Supernova blu-ray. First I'll mention that I don't have a burner so I extracted the film itself to lossless mkv using MakeMKV, and I play that on my external media player which handles mkv wonderfully. I did take a look at the menu video that plays and it's very well done.

Honestly I haven't seen this film look this good since I saw it in the theatre. Colors were wonderful, and there was a high amount of detail. Shadow detail was excellent, and blacks looks terrific. The sync was perfect. Motion was also perfect.

I did notice a couple instances of abnormalities, and I don't know if that was inherent to the source material or not:

- from 00:12:00 to 00:12:50 roughly, there are some weird artifacts on the screen during their prep for the jump. The screen seems to wobble and shift on and off, like faces seem to just shift and wobble. This begins just after the captain tells the doctor to use the other tube. I didn't notice this happen anywhere else. At first I thought it was the film but it doesn't really look like it is.

- At 01:00:34, just after Danica clocks him in the head and spits on him,  a vertical bar appears on the right side of the screen for a few seconds - top to bottom, and the bar appears lighter than the rest of the screen. It only lasts a few seconds and then everything is normal again.

Really those are the only things that caught my eye. The presentation was excellent - far better than the DVD. This movie is definitely underrated. There are some fantastic visuals - some very striking imagery with the blue dwarf, and the Nightingale is a beautiful ship. It had a great cast and excellent acting. And Danica was gorgeous. I also thought it was funny that they chose the captain of the Cygnus from The Black Hole to be the captain here too.

Thanks a ton for sharing your work with us. I look forward to disc 2!

Thanks for your review!

About abnormalities:

1) you are completely right, I'm afraid! This was due to the very aggressive noise reduction I used to delete all those scratches and drop outs (often HUGE) present in the sources - that in this shot was confused - and sadly I didn't notice it when I watched the final version... maybe due to the fact that there are only few frames inside a flashy shot, or maybe I blinked the eyes too much there, or... don't know, but there is definitely an error, and it must be corrected!

2) this is in both HDTV sources (even in the retail DVD!) - probably it's a "patch" in the master to replace a corrupted part:

Thanks to Oldfan for his quality control supervision!

As I must correct the glitches, please AVOID to download it, until the revised version is ready.

Meanwhile, for all the others who has download it, please point me to eventual further problems; I'll watch it again today to spot them, but again, your help will be very appreciated!

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news yesterday, but I'm glad to hear you're doing a re-do. This movies deserves it I believe. Interesting about the patch they used that even appears on the DVD - it's funny, the things you don't notice on DVD but do in HD. Well I look forward to your corrected version and thanks a ton for keeping us informed here of the progress!

Again, don't worry about it; at the contrary, you did a good service not to me, but to all the future watchers of this release. Thanks!

And, as you have good eyes, please watch it again to see if there are further glitches, please... (^^,)

Exactly at 01:23:26, with the screen all black, a little white line appears at the lower left side. ;)

JED, thanks also for that small glitch: now I must re-encode and, as it takes three days, I'd like to know if you all like the grain structure present, or if you want some less or more...

Yes, the grain is perfect as is. I have no problem with grain and prefer grain to a smoothed-over image with less detail.

OK, fixed version is on the spleen... if someone has still not grabbed it, you are welcome; for the others, who are courageous enough to wait another week to get the fixed version... thanks for your patience! (^^,)

Always liked this movie too. Will you be upping this on usenet or do you seed it as a torrent on another site?
Sorry for the n00bish question...was uncertain if that was a 'Fight Club type rule' :) Rule 1 etc :)
Thanks and looks like some great work going into the project.
