Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released) — Page 475

Yes and the MKV is out there already, so everyone can get it if they want, which is why I'm in no hurry to finish the BD and am waiting 'till I can get it right for those who want the "retail experience" ;-)

And not all BD players can play MKVs and for example mine only shows the first ten soundtracks in the v2.5 mkv. Also, I don't know if it's just a feeling, because it's impossible to do a direct comparison, but when I play the MKV through my BD player, the upscaling is kind of crappy and I get these aliasing artifacts, which are most visible on the crawl but can be seen elsewhere as well, but when I used TS Muxer to create a simple Blu Ray disc, the artifacts didn't seem to be there.

Exactly, Blu-ray format means limitations. With MKV number of audio tracks is not an issue. Unless Harmy gets access to better software, I think MKV is the best bet for next release.

Well, Blu-ray with menus has limitations.  If he wants to make a menuless Blu-ray with tsmuxer, audio tracks are unlimited.

With MKV, he's been avoiding PGS subtitles and including SRT subtitles for player compatibility reasons.  I think there may also be compatibility issues with certain lossless audio formats on MKV too.  So, a menuless Blu-ray may still be effectively better than an MKV in a couple areas.

But it's worth waiting to see if there are other authoring options, of course.

If anyone has names of software they want to try for BD menus, please pass them my way and I'll have a looksie.

As it stands for me now, I'd be happy just to have that awesome animated menu with all of the English trimmings possible. I'd get a kick out of the other languages, but it's looking like the final BD, until further notice, is going to be very limited.

Damn shame. And no Harmy, I do not blame you for this. Just stating facts. :)

It’s really sad when the “creative minds” behind something we hold dear are also guilty of its destruction.

I would have said DoStudio Authoring as it's easier to use than Scenarist BD and you can have pop-up menus etc, but unless you manage to get ahold of a full version, it's not of much use.

All I could find for authoring is Sony Vegas Pro 12.0 Build 367 for x64 systems. If Harmy or anyone needs me to go after it, just PM me.

I don't understand the technical discussion going on here haha, but I just wanted to say thanks for doing this Harmy!  I'm in my mid-twenties too, so I didn't see the theatrical versions in theaters.  The first versions of the films my family owned were the VHS Special Editions, so as a movie fan and a star wars fan it was a real treat to get to see these the way they were originally intended.  My wife and I had a wonderful time watching these, and we were surprised that all of the original effects still hold up quite well (and in many cases look better than the CG in the special editions).  Looking forward to the V2's for Empire and Jedi (though the V1's still looked great!)

Ignore me if I dont fully understand the current BD menu limitations being discussed.

But could we not have 1 page which lists up to the max number of audio tracks, and then a "more" button to take you to a secondary page which shows again up to the max number of audio tracks etc until all have been covered?

I thought it was a limitation on the graphical menu template with regards to the total number of tracks on a single page rather rather than a technical limitation of how many tracks can be referenced across all pages in the menu.

Again, ignore me if this is not applicable, but thought I'd throw this in after catching up on the thread again.

Well, no, it is unfortunately not applicable, because the programs just won't allow for another audio page to be made.

Why not make an "English only" version and a second "non-English" version?

Here are some pictures of my current setup at work:

I'd like to thank again to everyone, who donated towards the new computer!

Setup looks great, glad to see you are putting it to good use.

Images you posted (dont see any more) look great too. Did you scan new mattes for those Bespin shots, or were those just from better dvd/film stock somewhere?

Are you still accepting donations? I missed the first round (due to not having a credit card to use with pay pal) to buy the PC but maybe you need some programs to go on it. I would be happy to send you a little something.

I forgot to ask the same thing Re: donations. In light of the BD menu limitations in the free software, how about a donation drive for some real software, dont think you'd have a problem getting it :)

The software I'd need would cost more then the new computer did and frankly, for the use I'd get out of it, it wouldn't be worth the money.

Other than that though, I found I could still use more RAM, so that I could use my CPU to its full potential, so if someone wanted to donate towards that, it would be pretty awesome.

Sorry, I originally posted in the wrong thread. It belonged here.

Your setup looks great Harmy.  I hope your projects have gained a lot of momentum since upgrading to the new hardware.

Friendly piece of IT advice: try to get your tower at least a foot off the ground in order to avoid having it fill up with dust and hair (if you have a pet).  Getting it off the ground makes a huge difference!

I've registered to say thank you so much for this. I've watched Despecialized 2.5 and it's absolutely amazing. The 'making of' video was a fun and impressive watch as well.

I have grabbed the ESB and RoTJ Despecialized versions as well. Am I correct in understanding that there is only one release so far for these, and that is 1.0? Just want to make sure I have the most recent, as of now (the 2.0 comparisons for ESB look fantastic). And hopefully I have the full quality copies. The notes for Star Wars 2.5 have a file size listed, so it was easy to check. For the other two, I have found ~7.9gb M2TS files.

Can someone fill me in on when these were released (SW 1.0-2.5, and the sequels)? Sometimes it is a bit hard to tell, because the forum posts are updated rather than started anew, to keep everything in place.

This was indeed great to see. I had recently bought the Bluray trilogy and the Mos Eisley scenes just had me rolling my eyes. Last I checked fanedits, in probably 2005, there was a lot of promising work going on, mostly based on the laserdiscs, I think. But I thought I would see what's out there now, before it's time to watch the most cringeworthy of all, the updated Anakin ghost.

You have the latest version of each.  I don't know the timeline exactly, but the 1.0 series came out earlier than you'd think because it was based on a good-quality HDTV broadcast of the 2004SE, rather than the 2011SE Blu-rays.  And the HDTV source is still used as a high-def way to undo changes that were added post-2004, such as the rocks in front of R2.  Empire is next to get the 2.x treatment, and it has its own discussion thread.
