Other than a few parts I wasn't aware of for Sydow, plus Serkis as a motion capture model, I haven't seen a single one of these people in anything. That will help me with with getting back into the GFFA. I've been gone a very long time.
From what I've read, they seemed to pick actors respected by their peers, so I expect some solid work. Going by Abrams' ability to get deep performances from his crew, as well as picking out great ones to begin with, I'm not worried abut anything other than story and whatever Serkis will be doing.
Still somewhat optimistic. I'm a huge fan of Abrams' work, but he seems to have all manner of advisers and management whispering in his ear this time out.
Probably related; I nearly watched Star Wars77 this week. Nearly. ;-) Would have been the first time in 10 years.

I wish people would STFU about the minority/female thing. I'm just hoping that they have a good story. I think JJ has a pretty good track record with Star Trek. I enjoyed both of his ST movies.
BTW, latest webs rumor has Ep VII titled as "The Order of The Jedi". We shall see.

I feel the same way, actually. If I were to rate women by race, I'd rate them like this:
1. White women
2. Native American women
3. Middle Eastern women/Indian women (tie)
4. Asian women
5. Australian Aboriginal women
6. Black women
Of course, there are exceptions, especially when biracial women are taken into consideration.

So it's either a film about seniority within an organisation, a company directive, employee height differentials, a consignment of goods, a comment on the structure within that organisation... or it could be about some Jedi. If it was Lucas in PT mode I'd guess one of the former but as it's JJ, I'm gonna trust the film will be about Luke teaching some kids about the force.

In a place where most people are asian, it wouldn't be remarkable. I don't believe for a second that JJ & co went out of their way to not cast minorities or women. There is also the fact that several of these characters are presumably progeny of the white heroes. It is on that background that this discussion occurs.
Perhaps not, but they did intentionally craft a story with a cast of two females to 10 males.
I disagree that it can't be a good story without additional females or that contemporary notions of social justice require art fulfill certain quotas.
