Episode VII Cast List Announced

Wow Max Von in a Star Wars movie.

I'm pleased.

Max von Sydow's one of my favourite actors, so I'm pleased that he's part of the cast. Everyone else, though (apart from the OT actors), I'm indifferent to (largely because I haven't seen most of them in anything).

No Billy Dee Williams??

And yet Mayhew's in, despite being in a wheelchair. I don't understand how that will work. Did he get those knee replacements? Can he still play Chewie?

I guess they'll have Baker show up for a day or two, squeeze into the can, rotate the lid, shake a little bit, and then remote-control the rest, like the prequels. Please let me know if that's an inaccurate description of his involvement with the prequels.

Of the new folk, the only name I know is Serkis. Guess I need to read about these people.

I AM EXCITE.

I can't believe they didn't save this for May the Fourth. This announcement is HUGE but now I feel like if they don't do something on May 4th, I'll be disappointed.

Anyway, this awesome. Looks like all of the casting rumors were true for the younger cast. I always knew from the beginning the big three were going to be in it but I'm absolutely delighted that Kenny Baker is involved as well!

But no Billy Dee!!! Now that's frustrating :(

Extremely happy about this cast.

Oscar Isaac was amazing in Inside Llewyn Davis. So was Adam Driver (in his few scenes), and I've heard he's great in other stuff too. John Boyega was fantastic in Attack the Block. Domhnall Gleeson was pretty good in that one Harry Potter movie, plus he's Brendan Gleeson's son and I've heard he's good in other stuff. And Daisy Ridley's new, and I'm sure they must see a potential for greatness in her.

And Max von Sydow and Andy Serkis are legends.

And we've got Hamill, Ford, Fischer, Daniels, Baker, and Mayhew! I mean, we knew, but it's great to see confirmation. As for Billy Dee, I'm kind of glad, honestly that he's not in it. That would turn this movie into a reunion show. Those six are really all we need. Plus, Williams isn't looking too great these days, honestly.

Anyway, happy all around.

Seeing Ford, Fisher and Hamill in that picture really gave me goosebumps.  I am probably in the minority but I always wanted the ST back in the 80's instead of the PT.  I wasn't as fascinated with how Darth Vader came to be, as I wanted more adventures of Luke, Leia and Han.  To finally see this happen is very surreal since I lost hope way back in 8th grade when Lucas said he wasn't doing the ST.

And I like that they are going with alot of unknowns for the younger cast, as thats the way it should be for a Star Wars movie.  Max Von Sydow will add credibility just like Peter Cushing and Alec Guiness did to Star Wars.

Overall I'm pretty happy with this cast. I bet Andy Serkis will play a CG character.

Two people of color is nice (even if Oscar Hernandez whitewashed his name to get more work) and a young lady who bears a resemblance to Natalie Portman and the striking looking Adam Driver.

I know nothing about these people, but at (literally) a glance I'm glad it's not a line up of cute white people in their early 20s.

Yes, he had the surgery, and has undergone painful physical therapy to get walking again.

Chewie had a stand in on ESB, no reason someone can't double Peter for anything involving running down a corridor. Get one of the Episode III Wookiee performers for the heavy lifting. Movie magic. :)

BDW might still be in negotiations?

Andy Serkis. Love it.

Interesting.  That's immediately where the Debbie Downer noise played in my head.  With the exception of Planet Of The Apes (which I love), I'm not a fan of CGI characters via motion-capture.  That hints at a JarJar\Gollum type of side kick.  That's Serkis' bread and butter.

Yay Max! But will he sanction the use of bore worms? ;)

Yes, he had a stand-in during ESB and it never worked. They ended up refilming all of the stand-in's work because it just wasn't Chewie without Peter.

My paperback copy of Once Upon A Galaxy says they shot the double from the rear and in long shots because of that. And like I said, you have a bunch of guys who are well versed in how to act like a Wookiee from ROTS. They studied footage from the OT. :)

For ease of working (And since I didn't immediately find another website that had done it yet) here is a quick gallery I did of the new-ish faces (Or those faces who own less famous names)...

(Assuming the OT cast, Serkis and Sydow aren't new to anybody here)

Daisy Ridley - Don't recall seeing her in anything?

John Boyega - Pretty good in 'Attack the Block'.

Adam Driver - Seen the face but not anything that face has been in... but I like the face.

Oscar Isaac - Amazing in every film he is cast in (Even in the bad films). Awesome sauce!

Brian Gleeson - A very memorable performance in 'Dredd' 2012.

This cast list really fills me with confidence and there isn't a single wtf?!? casting choice in there...

...wait, what? No Billy Dee Williams? WTF?!?

So we can keep the other thread on directing.

Speaking of which, we kinda left behind the original Episode VII thread (from before a director had been hired).

From a film theory perspective, this forum is decidedly auteurist ;)

Anyway, it's cool that Gollum and Dr. Kynes / Ming the Merciless will both be in this. Very unexpected as I'm pretty sure they hadn't even been rumored, so someone did a good job of keeping their names under wraps.

As Cobb pointed out, it's cool that Driver and Isaac will be going into outer ... space(!) yet again. Driver had a small role in Lincoln, which, like many of Steven's movies, was produced by Kathleen Kennedy. For all we know, that might've helped him get the role.

Does the absence of Billy Dee's name on this particular list mean he's not in the movie at all?

Also, is everyone on that list even there in that picture??? It's so low-res I had to zoom in before realizing the guy with the ponytail was Mayhew. Is that Tony talking to Mark? Is that Oscar Isaac sitting next to Boyega? Is the guy sitting between Driver and JJ von Sydow, because if it is I barely recognize him at this angle/resolution. There are a couple other dudes, I'm assuming one of them is Gleeson, but whoever the other guy is he's not on the list. Is that Kathy Kennedy sitting between them? What about Kenny?

It's pretty funny seeing Andy Serkis sitting at a meeting for yet another huge sci-fi/fantasy franchise like it's nothing. After LotR, Kong, Apes, and directing 2nd Unit on The Hobbit, he's probably use to this kind of thing.

Oh and did anybody here win the "Max Von Sydow will be in EpVII" sweepstake?

Duke Leto was also in Judge Dredd.

Why if there're six original cast members there can't be a place for seven? If one says "A", then it would look logical to have him saying "B", wouldn't it?
