Lucasfilm clarifies the future of the EU

Out of all the existing Star Wars material, only the six films and the clone wars TV show are now canon, and all Star Wars content (books, films, games etc.) moving forward will be canon and overseen by Lucasfilm's story department. However, new content is able to draw from aspects of the EU if it wants (i.e. Rebels). So basically, Episode VII, VIII and IX are free to incorporate elements of the EU if they choose to but they aren't beholden to anything that has happened in the EU. Thoughts?

What Tim said. I'm so haply to say goodbye to Caedus and Krayt.

This basically doesn't change the current state.

So the first new EU we get is a prequel to "Rebels". OK, I guess.

I'm excited for a clean slate and the possibility of the good parts of the EU being pulled out. Is Zahn allowed to re-write the Heir to the Empire trilogy to fit into the new continuity? ;-)

Which clone wars TV show ?

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

This is what I expected/hoped. Glad they're doing this.

Sounds cool to me.

No one is breaking into my house and stealing my Marvel Star Wars comics, so I'm happy.

No matter what direction the new movies take, it's very unlikely that the EU I liked best will be contradicted, as it's mostly not post-ROTJ,  so I don't even forsee the need to compartmentalize Star Wars in my head.

As I said on another thread its a pity they didn't jettison the CW cartoons also,.....(Darth Maul....back from the dead....with Robo-Legs is canon???)

Some corners of the fandom are not going to take this very well.

IIRC, only one character that first appeared in the Marvel book was ever canonized?

That came straight from the mind of George, so yes.

The general gist was that they are gonna pick and choose which bits they want and which bits they want to ignore. "Maul back from the dead" is still in CW, but they don't ever have to mention him again if they don't want to.

The only even slightly strong reaction I have to this news, is wondering if this is a final 'closed door' on the animated film version of 'Shadows of the Empire' (Voiced by the original actors) that I thought might've been possible now.

The non-canon "Legends" banner would be a great excuse to re-release the OOT, if Lucas is really so concerned with only the 2011 Blu-Ray versions being canon.

It really would, like how everything in music has a "rarities" collection. The Beatles had their separate box set of the mono version albums. Plus it would give them an excuse to just do it as plain vanilla IP catalog release instead of a more pricey mega restoration. (Which is fine by me)

Clarifies what? ... They haven't really said anything new.

True it never has to be brought up again but it is canon.

He set the films he created as the canon. This includes the six Star Wars episodes, and the many hours of content he developed and produced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. These stories are the immovable objects of Star Wars history, the characters and events to which all other tales must align.

Yes, this new book cover has given me a full on nerd boner ;-)

Surely it's impossible to look cooler than Luke does right there ^.

However, that cover does deeply worry me as it's a post ROTJ book. Because JJ hasn't fully written, or even filmed the 3 films that come after this book, then he can kiss his creative freedom goodbye, as anything in that book will be canon and forced into his script/films.

(Oops, my apologies. After some googling it seems it's set after ANH. I should have guessed by the blue saber... slaps own face --> Go new EU LOL)

Ummmmm, fool me once?

Seriously though, I wasn't planning on spending hard-earned cash on anything moving forward except a ticket to see Episode VII (although a restored OOT and OPT might change that).

I've barely read any of the EU set post-RotJ, mainly kept up with the gist of it via wookieepedia, so this doesn't exactly come as heart-breaking news or anything. It's what we all saw coming, anyway. At the same time though, I can't blame the continuity-obsessed fans for feeling a bit betrayed. While Lucasfilm did eventually say "not all canon is equal" several years ago, they were still calling it "canon." Rather than having a tiered system of dividing lines, it would seem they've settled on just one: there's the stuff George was involved with and then there's everything else.

The reality is that George let the EU get away from him because he never planned on doing Ep7. RotJ was THE END, all caps, and what happened afterward was hearsay, written by other people playing in his sandbox. Abrams may be directing, but it's still with George's involvement, unlike all those countless books.
