The ending of Aliens totally ripped off the ending of the first Alien, with the whole "blown out of the goddamn airlock" thing, to be even later copied in Alien Resurrection. I am sort of fond of Alien3 for being different from the other "Alien" films, and that is why I put "Alien" and "Alien 3" purposely skipping alien 2.

Come on Aliens was by far the best of the series. Alien 3 sucked. Alien Resserection made no fucking sense. The first Alien was a pretty good horror flick but the huge mayham of Aliens rocked.

Yes, Alien resurrection made no sense and flat out pissed me off (so did AVP for that matter), and I think Aliens is an astonishing balls-to-the-wall action movie. I just prefer the darness and creepiness of the 1st and 3rd. I wasn't calling Aliens a bad film, which it certainly is not.

If you are going to make a dark creepy horror picture it has to be scary. Alien 3 was not scary.

Exactly. Quoting David Giler: "There were some very interesting things in the movie, but the real basic thing is if you are making a horror movie it shoud be scary. And I don't think Alien 3 is particularly scary."
That's how I feel. Alien 3 was a seriously flawed film long before it was even made. I do, however, appreciate it for what it is. There were great visual moments, character moments, and every scene is drenced in darkness and despair. Say what you want, but Alien 3 is a great movie.

Whats funny about the extras on the DVD is its nice filmmakers of a bad movie admit they screwed up. Thats why Fincher has done his best to distance himself from this movie. Though I blame the studio for Alien 3s badness.

Yes, all of them seem to hate the movie!

When its own makers dislike the movie I think you have a problem.

Just like the first Resident Evil.

But of course the ending was the best part of that bore-fest.

Shaun of the Dead. Best ending for a zombie movie ever.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

That's because you didn't watch Troma's "Bloodsucking Freaks".

Sneakers is such an underrated and underappreciate movie. I loved it. Great cast.

You know, I remember hearing a story. Kubrick was at the airport, preparing to get on a plane, and security told him they wouldn't let him through until he explained the end of that movie.

Which is ironic, as Kubrick hated to fly. When he was working on post-production for 2001 he took a ship to america instead of taking an airplane, and he edited some of the film while on the ship.

Besides, I don't belive that an airport crewmember would recognize Stanley Kubrick, as very few people even knew what he looked like.

Well, I don't remember the story very well. It could have been a customs agent (who would have seen his passport) or something like that.
But the thing about the refusal unless explained I know I remember.

Sounds like an urban legend to me.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Well, it's not one that's listed on Snopes.com. But their celebrity urban legends section is certainly not the most expansive part of their site.

What happens at the end of 2001? What is the movie about, anyway?

Now I gotta find the thread that had the interpretation in it. I'll get back to ya on this.

OK, I'm back. Here you go: 2001 Thread.
The link you want is about halfway down the page and is called Kubrick 2001. Enjoy.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

I think I understand what happened. That floating entity was like the key to our evolution. At the beginning, when the monkey used that bone to kill the others, that thing appeared and allowed for the next step in our evolution. It was like they were somehow "worthy". At the end of the film, man (having made the incredible journey) was now "worthy" of evolving another step. The entity showed up yet again and hence the "star child" you see at the very end.

On the third page of the 2001 Thread I have posted excerpts from a looong interview with Stanley Kubrick and quotes from Arthur C. Clarke that do go someway towards making straightforward meaning from the highly open to interpretation ending.

"The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country." - Goering.

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it." - Goebbels.

"In times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act." - Orwell.

That was another reason I pointed DC in that direction; he can see multiple interpretations and find out what works for him. But DC, YOU GOTTA SEE THE MOVIE! Love it or hate it, it's required viewing for any serious movie fan.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.
