THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released) — Page 68

Found the presskit on Ebay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/FROM-1971-THX1138-PRESSBOOK-ROBERT-DUVALL-DONALD-PLEASENCE-LUCAS-1ST-FILM-/261411658027?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cdd59592b

It lists the tv spot in 30, 20, and 10 second(!) lengths. One teaser and one trailer, one of which at least is on the DVD. The radio spots, which were once on the official Star Wars site, and downloaded by msycamore. Lastly, the featurette about the actor's getting their heads shaved, also on the official DVD.

I'm getting very close to having everything in order for my THX 1138 captures.

My capture chain will be Runco LJR-II =(svideo)=> Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle (Thunderbolt).

The Runco LJR-II's builtin comb filter is better than my Extron YCS-100 because it was tweaked by MSB specifically for it, so that's one less A->D->A conversion in the chain. ;-)

I own three copies of the US LBX LD and I intend on doing a full median-of-three (basically, a TooT) with them. Thankfully, the Blackmagic Media Express software stops capturing if even a single frame is dropped, so I don't have to worry about any dropped frames in my completed captures.

Is it easy to manually IVTC this beast? How many wonky cadence changes does it have?

JEDIT: Also, do we have a bit perfect rip of the PCM track?

I f**king love you Antcufaalb. :) The IVTC on these are pretty straightforward contrary to what you may believe from this threads' history... cadence change mid-reel, nothing weird.

Spaced Ranger, no receivement?

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

Nothing yet, but I'm always expecting it (short-term pessimist, long-term optimist).

It's probably just mini-wage gov-thugs poking around, thinking they're geniuses, tryin' to saving their new world order or something ...

What freaks me out about that episode of Cowboy Bebop, is that I actually used to own a Sony Beta exactly like the one they eventually scrounge up.

Found mine in a thrift store as opposed to a abandoned ruin. All the buttons and indicators were in Japanese. How it ran on U.S. current without an adapter I'll never know! I wish I had kept it sometimes, but who knew I'd be tinkering with dead formats twenty years later? ;)

That's it! The animators drew it right down to the camera connector in the lower right corner of the unit. Curious they chose an old top loader.

Now that I'm inching closer to capturing these damn LDs, I'd like to get some kind of team together for a non-raw release. (I will, of course, upload my raw captures to Usenet, as promised.)

At this point, I'm mostly interested in color-correction. I'd prefer to either have one blanket setting for the entire film or one setting for each (preferably, IP) reel.

I'm not one to go deep into post-processing. IVTC, color-correction, upscaling (for an anamorphic release), and maybe low-pass filtering (Y: ~5.5MHz, C: ~1.3 MHz) is all I'm interested in.

Shoot me a PM if you're interested in joining. Even if you only have knowledge to contribute, that's fine; the more, the merrier.

Is this from a raw capture with the new player?

Wow, very nice! Is this a single pass Runco LJR-II =(svideo)=> Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle clip? Or is it the median-of-three result?

The former. I just tossed the LD in, did a quick capture of ~5s, and took a frame from there to post.

I'll post some median-of-three samples when I actually do the capture(s). :-)

If you have time, do a quick capture of the spot that gave msycamore so much trouble? I'd like to finally nail down if it's something unusual with the LD master or an anomaly with my DVD recorder.

I'll gladly do a quick capture. Can you reply with a hyperlink to the post(s)?

Good idea. I can't find it, and some old images aren't showing up anymore.

Does anyone have a comprehensive list of changes in the DVD/BD release?

Excellent, thanks! I guess I'm just worried that they might have missed something. I trust the people around here more than people elsewhere on the web.

My ideal, which I did try to pull off and failed, was to do a split-screen comparison of the LD vs DC. I would still love to see that done and it would also prove what all the changes are...

I'm working on calibrating my capture card this week, among other things. I can get pretty close (accurate 75% grey ~(191,191,191) and almost-accurate white ~(240,240,240)), but I'm still not entirely happy with it and I want to fiddle with it a bit more.

I don't have a full 10-bit workflow and I'm struggling with determining when it's best to drop to 8-bit.

Any tips, guys?

I'm thinking about dropping to 8-bit immediately after capturing, color-correction-be-damned.

Hi SilverWook! I think the spot you're thinking about is the conversation between THX and LUH when he get to know about her shift change. But the problem was that the captures lacked frames/fields in different spots, so unfortunately something weird happened when these were being recorded. I wish there was an easy way for us to figure out what exactly caused this, I suspect the recorder being the culprit as captures on different players have these issues. Not funny if future recordings are to be made and not knowing if they will be all right or not. :(

Any theories on what could have caused this weird hiccup anyone? Both fields and frames missing on different spots between captures. I can try to post a sample of a problematic spot. Not that I think we would be any wiser from it. The only thing I can think of is if you could check other recordings you've made with the same equipment and see if you can perform IVTC on them successfully.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

Nice sample frame, AntcuFaalb. Thank you for doing this! I would definitely like to help you out if there's anything I could contribute with, not sure if I have the time at the moment though.

If the recorder hicupped in the same scene across different captures, it might be something that was non Kosher in LD master. Something the players cheerfully ignore, but becomes an issue when capturing it. After all, nobody ever anticipated using old analog video transfers this way.

I blame Coily in any case...
