I had to drain the patio again after it got submerged under about 4" of rainwater.

The lawn is under about half an inch too (more a paddy field).

I had to put the tomato plants out two days ago too because they were too big for the window sill.

They aren't loving the weather either.

Damn you alien whale probe!

You're able to grow tomatoes at this time of year! And it's raining!

Lucky guy.

Tomato plants not tomatoes.

I had them growing from seed on my window sill for well over a month, along with peas.

The plants are now outside but I shan't get a harvest until July/August.

I have broadbeans, carrots, spuds, garlic, onions, cabbages and elephant garlic on the go too along with loads of herbs.

I wish it would rain less though as it's exhausting getting all that water down into the bucket and down the sink.

I meant tomato plants. Still, the only place any vegetables would be beginning to grow over here is in greenhouses. The other ones don't get planted for at least another month.

Climate wise Britain is a bit weird.

It's positioned on the globe at the same latitude as the coldest parts of Russia and Canada but we can grow palm trees.

This is England (not at the moment I hasten to add) :

It's the gulf stream.

Central Scotland is usually the most wet and windy place but this year England and Wales have been getting the floods and the sandsmog.

The garlic and broadbeans should go out in the Autumn. They pop up the same time as the daffodils.

Why don't you go quote somebody that posted in that topic out of context and subtly alter their text to drastically change the meaning of what they said?  Go on... you'll feel better.

I know it's a little thing but why on Windows 7 has My computer been moved from being an icon at the top left hand corner of the screen like in every other version of windows to just another item in the start menu?

Every time I try to get to my computer I go for the icon in the top left hand corner and open it by mistake and only then do I remember to go into the start menu.

Why change something that wasn't broken and we were all used to using?

Author

For the same reason they completely removed the start menu from windows 8**, and made it work like a smartphone or something I guess.

**=Yes I am aware there is a way to add the start menu to windows 8 through things which do not come installed and that you have to download

Yeah I have a friend who has windows 8 because it came pre installed on his computer and he uses his computer for programing and debugging. Needless to say I have no wish to ever use it and he is planning on downgrading to Windows 7.

Is it just me or between Vista,My computer being gone, and Windows 8 does Microsoft get off on making our PCs hard to use.

Pro wrestling is a wierd thing. It's often exciting, sometimes dumb, occasionally impressive and frequently silly.

But at it's best, the line between real and unreal ceases to matter, and it is larger than life pageant of the mythic made real.

Last night, The Undertaker lost.

It's mental.

My parents have recently got themselves a Win8 PC. Usually I sort out the bugs and setup stuff for them but I'm totally lost on the Win8 interface. I can't figure out to do the most basic things on it, that I'd take for granted on Win7.

I think Microsoft were still light-headed from actually getting Win7 to be better than XP and not a disaster like Vista and thought they could afford to get arrogant again. I'll wait for Win9 aka Windows: The Hubris Edition.

I used to love professional wrestling when I was a kid, but it comes off as too phony for me to enjoy anymore.

Sounds like a good plan to me.

Yeah I am normally able to do all the basic stuff like setting up the computer, uninstalling stuff, running virus scans, and all that other junk on any computer but i can't find a thing on my friend's computer. You know smart phone operating systems were made for smart phones, not desk top PCs. That is why they are called smart phone operating systems and not PC operating systems microsoft.

I tell you if Microsoft was trying to make a broken operating system that I would never use even if it was given to me for free I don't think they could have done a better job then they did with windows 8.

Microsoft is planning on killing Windows XP next week, and governments around the world are giving them gobs of money to keep supporting it for them.  Seriously, why kill it.  MANY important programs are still ran on windows xp.  (Security programs at government facilities, hospitals, schools, and many more are still using xp for a variety of reasons)

Yeah i don't understand how this is good business. They are keeping Windows 8 a program no one wants and killing one people are begging them to keep. My guess is they could make a ton of money selling updates for XP.

Oh well. No one ever accused Microsoft of caring about their costumers or being good at what they do.

My new pc has Win 8.1.  It's fine as long as I use desktop mode, although tile mode is fun to mess with on occasion.

I don't see what the big deal was, now that I actually have it.

Why change something that most people could use by instinct? Try doing long hours of work on windows 8 or anything that requires precise controls.  Why was the change needed, most people don't have touchscreens on their PCs and even if they do the type of work they do on a PC is still better suited to a keyboard and mouse.  Why should I bother with windows 8 and having to download an attachment just to get a version that work something like what 99% of people are used to but not as well?

Most people can do their day to day computing in their sleep since we have been using some version of this interface since the late 1980s,and it works fine.  Sure if you put the time in you may be able to learn how to use the news system but why should you have to put the work into it when the old one was not broken and if it is just for touchscreens then why is Microsoft forcing it on us by putting it on every new PC and not just the ones with touchscreens.

It's like if Ford started putting out cars with joysticks instead of steering wheels and gas pedals. Sure the new joysticks may work if you take the time to learn to use them but why would the average person want to relearn how to drive a car when they were doing just fine with the steering wheel everyone knows how to use?

Microsoft is trying to make things more efficient, but it's harder for us ingrained into the old way of doing things. Look at the Office Ribbon. For those who knew how to do things the long way, it took them years to get used to it. If you're new to office or all of the things Excel in particular can do, the Ribbon makes everything more efficient. If driving a Ford with a joystick saved 20 MPG, you might be willing to relearn.

Do we really need to have a Start menu, or even a file system, when you can search for whatever you want? I don't even use the Start Menu on Win7 or OSX, I search for everything. It's about making your workflow more smooth.

But, alas, every time MS tries to push something forward, they have to drag it back. 8.1 is getting a traditional Start Menu. I expect they'll start shipping Xbox One's without Kinects before too long.

Difference is, that me as a Windows, Win95, Win98, XP, Vista and Win7 user, finds my parent's Win8 PC incomprehensible but can more easily use my brother's Apple OS. That can't be right.

On another subject I recently bitched about... YouTube. Eureka I've found out how to 'unhide' all my channel subscriptions so now I can use the site almost as easily as before they "improved" it.

"The Stanford Prison Experiment,"  a famous sociology experiment, proved nothing except that people have no idea how a good experiment is designed.

When you bring it up, and I rip every single aspect of the experiment to shreds, you can't follow up with "Yeah, but don't you agree with the results anyways?"

And why in the name of Charles Berlitz would they want to make a prison invisible anyway?

One can but hope.

Yes thank you. That thing does not work and it is the one thing that is holding me back from buying an Xbox one.  If I don't want to play motion sensing games that I have to yell at all day why should I have to pay for the stupid camera?  What is more I don't have space anywhere in my house for it.

Maybe the kinect is fine if you have a giant house and you play your games in a big empty room that is sound proofed, but I have yet to see one work in the real world and it sure as heck will not work in my living room. So thanks but no thanks Microsoft.

I went with the Xbox the last two generations but forcing the kinect on us has caused me to go with Ps4 and WiiU.

Look if there are people out there that like the Kinect and can make it work i say good for them, but as for me I don't want to pay for something that I have never been able to make work and that I don't have space for in my house.

I really hope Microsoft gets rid of the Kinect because I am huge Fable fan and if they don't I will not be able to play Fable 4.
