Info Wanted: Star Wars Unaltered Original Trilogy in HD TV broadcast?

Star Wars was broadcast in it’s original form in HD.

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of this?

I can’t even find a picture about it. I really wondered if the quality is about the same of the 2006 GOUT DVD or if it’s better. I didn’t even realize the possibilities about it, because so much work is devoted to restoring Star Wars. Often a hd broadcast of an original film can look surprisingly good.

...what station did it air on?
...what country?
...what date?

BuddhaMaster, i think you are misinformed.  The only HDTV broadcasts of the OT have been of the special editions.

In 2006:

There was also another date they supposedly aired the "original trilogy in HD" on another channel when I was browsing the internet. But I can't find that information right now. Probably it was SciFi channel or something.

I absolutely don't get that bit:

"Sky is quick to point out that it is the only broadcaster to show the whole saga in HD, as LucasFilm has not permitted the original three films to be shown in HD."

Seems contradict.

But if they are able to broadcast original films in HD, as they did when it still was a fresh technology and they would often look surprisingly well because there is simply a lot more picture information that was lost in SD broadcast.

And why don't they do it with Star Wars? Why didn't they?

Was Lucas really supervising to not let this happen at all cost?

Like pulling back all original copies of original Star Wars from every tv station and then send back a special edition copy?

It really sounds worse than the French inquisition

I think it's worthwhile to point out that many (most, perhaps) people say "original trilogy" without meaning "original unaltered trilogy".

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Yeah, this is a red herring.  When people out in the media distribution world say "original trilogy", they just mean some version of the Special Editions.

Basically ever since they stopped explicitly labeling the Special Editions as such, there's been a lot of consumer confusion about what movie you're actually watching/buying/streaming.  Which, I feel, is an intentional bait-and-switch scam.

The short answer is: unless you got it from OT.com, it's the crappy wrong version you didn't actually want.

So in a nutshell: "Original Trilogy" just means "First Trilogy"

This is why some say "Original Original Trilogy".

If you see an official website advertising the "original" trilogy, just assume it means "original" as opposed to "prequel".

Hello there, reviving this thread. I've found some more information.

Wookie Groomers HD Broadcast was released sometime 2007.

TO be considered containing more details in the highlights than blu-ray.

Harmy was supposed using this "version". And Neverar talks about this in this thread: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Neverars-1080p-Star-Wars-Color-Correction/post/687112/#TopicPost687112

See original information about Wookie Groomer's Present release in 2007

And mentioned here:

I just can't figure out if this is a truly original broadcast, or if it's a Special Edition 1997/2004 HD Broadcast that was made prior to the Bluray release. Somehow it seems to be an original GOUT broadcast I've never heard about it anyhow.

Wookie Groomer's HDTV capture is the 2004 Special Editions in HD, that is all. It's useful primarily because it's a good HD source for undoing the 2011 visual changes.

Learn to use the internet and you will find cool stuff.  I have the HDTV captures of ALL 6 films but Ep, 4-6 are the Special Edition Circa 2004.  It is the ONLY way you'll find them on the net sadly.  There is NO Original Trilogy as WE know it NOR is there any GOUT HDTV broadcast captures anywhere because they never happened.

Sorry.

The very first version of star wars has never been on home video.  However the second version with a new hope has never gotten a new transfer after 1993.

Empire and Jedi also are stuck at 1993 4:3 SD letterbox.

They spliced on a nice clean version of the original crawl in 2006 to make the Star Wars DVD original but it still was the same Definitive edition transfer afterwards.

The 2004 cut is no way better than the blu ray.  And at least the blu ray is not zoomed in like the spike TV version.

Has some fixes but also worse new cgi alterations and Vader yelling noooo in return of the jedi.

Basically the blu ray is a lazy tweaked 2004 from the same 1080P locked master.

Would have been nice to get newly transferred versions of the films of all versions for a master set or just the original theatrical versions for the folks who don't want anything else.
