Saints Acquire Veteran Cornerback McKenzie

NEW ORLEANS (Sports Network) - The New Orleans Saints (news) Monday acquired cornerback Mike McKenzie (news) and a future conditional draft choice from Green Bay. In exchange, the Packers received a second-round pick in 2005 and quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan (news).

New Orleans agreed to pay the remainder of McKenzie's contract, which runs through the 2006 season.

McKenzie, who is in his sixth NFL season, has been a starter at left cornerback for Green Bay since his rookie year. In 70 career games, he has posted 284 tackles (235 solo), 15 interceptions, a sack and a fumble recovery.

The Memphis product has played in one contest this season (9/19 vs. Chicago), where he had one pass defensed.

McKenzie was coming off a stellar 2003 campaign, where he had four interceptions, including one for a 90-yard touchdown, and 57 tackles (51 solo).

O'Sullivan, a 6-2, 220-pounder out of Cal-Davis, is fresh off a solid campaign in NFL Europe. The third-year NFL player led the Frankfurt Galaxy to the 2004 World Bowl championship as he went 120-of-196 for 1,527 yards with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also ranked second in the league with a 91.9 passer rating.

The Packers were in need of another quarterback after releasing former No. 1 pick Tim Couch (news) earlier this year. The urgency for a signal caller became even more apparent when All-Pro signal-caller Brett Favre (news) was knocked out of Sunday's game against the Giants with a concussion. Currently, the only other quarterbacks on Green Bay's roster are Doug Pederson (news) and Craig Nall (news).
