At first I was a bit disappointed with the rendering speed in After Effects (BTW, I'd like to thank Chris Solo for donating the entire Adobe Creative Suite 5 Production Premium package to me!) but then I realized I didn't have multi-threading turned on - after that, it runs like lightning

You can get even faster by not rendering through the main AE program, but by using its command line renderer. This can be done quite easily with the free AE render manager. Just setup your render queue as usual, save the project, close AE and open the project with that tool.

Oh, I wondered if something like that was possible. Might it also be possible to render the x264 file using my script without the lossless intermediate?

Well, you can render a h.264 file directly out of After Effects, but it doesn't nearly offer as many settings as x264 does, so the latter one will most likely give better results.

Feeding an After Effects project into an Avisynth script isn't possible though. The command line renderer simply uses After Effects' render engine without starting the main program.

I would say that it might be a little difficult to put an HD film onto a DVD-9 without making some serious compromises but that's up to Harmy to decide

I'm finished with my OT covers.

I updated the back cover of "Star Wars" (aka. "A New Hope") to have a paragraph break where the original version was missing one.

Also, the ROTJ cover is done, with Yoda and Chewie on the back. I could have put Vader, but then he'd be the only bad guy; and really Chewie does play a big role in the Trilogy (especially by providing the key turning point of the ground campaign at the Battle of Endor). Albeit, his character is usually overshadowed by Han.

I'm going to include .psd versions of the files for anyone who wants to make personal edits (such as adding "Episode IV" and "A New Hope" to the Star Wars cover and "V"/"VI" to the ESB/ROTJ spines, or else changing the Harmy credit to Adywan or something.)

There /are/ roman numerals on the spines and other such things like that in the PSDs, but their layers are just hidden in favor of the covers being used for Harmy's edition.

Beautiful covers, chyron847.  Quick question though, what are the specs on the cases?  Are they for standard DVD amaray cases or are they for blu-ray cases?

Thanks!

EDIT: Sorry, I just noticed the blu-ray logo on the spine, so I'll assume they are spec'ed for a blu-ray case.

Very nice, chyron! They look great on my HD monitor.

Well, I already once said I'm not a big fan of those backs (but that's just my personal taste). But what I'd probably do with the fronts is to try and bring their colors closer together - something like this:

It would need more work but it should give you the idea :-)

My roommate and I have been hosting weekly movie nights at our house. All our friends come over, there's beer and popcorn aplenty, and it's a great time. Last night we watched Star Wars (which one of our friends HAD NEVER SEEN) and of course we used 2.5.

Everyone loved it, including the first-timer! The cheers when Han shot Greedo without any wonky CGI foolery nearly woke the neighbors. Next week is Empire.

Thank you so much for your hard work, Harmy. It is very much appreciated.

I just wanted to log on to say thank you so much Harmy.  I have not been this impressed with a restoration job on something since first seeing the Doctor Who episodes that had been restored by fans for the DvDs.  I just watched the first movie and you did an amazing job,you saved Star Wars for me. I hadn't watched the films in years on account of only having the old DvD bonus discs that I just couldn't get to look right on any of my TVs.

My mom asked me to thank you for her.  I showed this to her and she was blown away and had a tear in her eye at one point. Star Wars came out when she was 17 and it has been her favorite movie ever since but like me she just couldn't get into the SEs and she couldn't get use to either having people's head squeezed flat or having the picture tiny on her TV. Another problem she had is that her hearing isn't the best and she had trouble making out the dialog on the old DvDs,but she didn't on this file so she wanted me to tell you how grateful she is to you for saving her favorite film ever.

It takes me about two days on my internet connection to download each video file but it is worth it.

Thank you so much as someone who isn't good with this sort of thing but likes my movies looking as good as they can I just have to say I am amazed at what you did.

Thank you!

thank you!

Thanks for sharing that, DrCrowTStarwars! Someobody's a Dr. Who, MST3K, and Star Wars fan! :)

I was only 5 when my folks took me to see it in 1977, but I am still flooded by the memories of the experience and your post brought them to the front of my mind again. My parents weren't divorced yet, my Dad was in awe like the rest of us (not an easy task), and the community feeling was just incredible. Just by the music, intent, and costumes, everyone knew that imposing all black character was the bad guy, and they booed and hissed at him before saying a word! All they heard was the breathing. It was all a form of magic that will never be experienced again, and Harmy's work is EASILY the closest to that original feeling I will ever get. I just can't put into any deserving words what the DE has accomplished for that 5 year old in me, who now gets to enjoy it at an adult level.

Yeah also Babylon 5 and Star Trek but I couldn't find a way to fit those in there:)

Really cool story there,I would have loved to see the movies in theaters.

I was also five the first time I saw Star Wars,I remember because my family didn't have a lot of money at the time but we had been given a used Tv and VCR by some relatives, but we didn't have any tapes for it.  One day my little brother got really sick so we were just hanging out in the living room when the UPS guy showed up with a package from one of my aunts in Utah,it was the Star Wars Trilogy on VHS. My mom hadn't asked for it or anything it had just been sent to us out of the blue. It was the late 80s release in the boxset that had all the cool artwork from the posters and a letter then George Lucas on the side of the packaging. Any way to make a long story less long we watched all three movies in one go and I was glued to my seat. I loved all the characters and I went on to watch the movies so many times that I knew every line of dialog and every musical beat and sound effect.  It got to the point that one time I was at a babysitter's house and the speakers went on his Tv but I kept watching Jedi saying all the dialog myself.  Then when the SEs came out I didn't mind them that much except that the movies I grew up with were gone, these weren't the movies I knew by heart,it just didn't feel right.  My mom felt the same way.

Now as my mom put it "This looks as good as it did the first time I saw it in theaters." and some movies that were very special for my family and I have been returned to us.  So thank you so much to anyone who did any work or provided any feedback, thank you so much.

Harmy-- when you're about ready to start authoring the BD, let me know. I've got another major release of Project Threepio in the works.

Have you ever considered doing subs for alternate audio tracks like maybe the commentary tracks?

Very briefly, but no. I have a hard enough time preventing my project from sprawling totally completely out of control--I have decided against doing subtitles for commentary tracks and supplemental features. I barely accommodate alternate audio mixes as it is (I primarily do original multichannel mixes, but provide additional source materials for original mono mixes, but don't do the 85 or 93 audio revisions, for example). I have to draw a line somewhere, for my own sanity.

Project Threepio is designed as more of a subtitling toolkit, however, so people interested in making subs may find some value in using some of my tools, etc, if not the actual subtitles.

I saw 5,5 GB version of 2.5 on Thepiratebay

 Thanks for the tip.

After months on and off of trying to get this (or any version 1, 2, 2.1) I finally was able to get that reduced version. Even better it played on my DVD player and looks great.

I quite like the SE's overall but I also always maintained that HQ versions of the theatrical versions should have been released on DVD.

I never had any major problem with the SE's except for the Han-Greedo scene which just doesn't work any way you try to adjust it. If Greedo shoots at all he can't possibly miss.

The other problem with the scene besides adding the Greedo shot is that the whole scene needed more changes. The addition of the Jabba scene means that audio of Han from there is no longer needed with Greedo. Greedo doesn't need to convey the lines Jabba uses anymore as now we have Jabba saying them.

What the SE needed to do was to revert to Greedo's lines as seen in the Catina edit on the BD bonus disc.

Other than that the only thing of the SE's that I think was something that could be done without is changing the color timing. I faked my own color timing by adjusting the levels of my TV to best match the IB print photos I found online. Worked not too badly overall at least it restored the basic look of a 70's movie.

So like everyone else awesome production from Harmy and all those who worked with him on the video and the audio streams.
