@Ryan McAvoy That's just it, they're flak-like and not necessarily anti-aircraft weapons. It was just the choice from the FX guys. Instead of having the lasers suddenly disappear into nothingness (sometimes they seem to), or go on forever, the lasers eventually "blap" into spheres of flak-like explosions. Their purpose is for a little extra detail and excitement - Nothing more, nothing less.
