Help: looking for... 'Dead Poets Society' - preservation of the US laserdisc version?

Hi everybody reading,

this is my first request, but I have to request it. 😃

Did anyone preserve the US LaserDisc Version of “Dead Poets Society”, or does know anything on such a preservation?

The US LaserDisc is about 13 minutes longer than any DVD or BD release.

I have no knowlege or equipment to do such a preservation myself, but I hope that this was done before, so that I could put a preserved Version next to the (opefully soon arriving) LD.

Thanks for reading. 😃

I preserved the deleted scenes onto DVD. I put them on youtube as well.

Thanks for the info, I really would like to see a preservation of the complete extended Movie. At least I can watch it at home from LD. But I think DVDs are such more usefull, using at DVD watching evenings at friends homes.

Unfortunately, the massive difference between laserdisc and blu-ray makes this a project for someone else.

If you are watching the movie at the home, then using DVD would be the best and more useful.

The prix location appartement i.e apartment price must be known before buying or selling it.

I had this laser disc years ago and sold it thinking it was a slam dunk that the extended cut would be released on dvd.  The LD is damn near impossible to find on eBay, I've been watching for a couple years now.  It's on my list; too, years ago I converted my LD library to DVD and I really wish that I had this one still when I was doing all that.

I just re-checked eBay and there's one up there, first one I've ever seen.  Bid is at $10 right now if you want it badly enough.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Laserdisc-DEAD-POETS-SOCIETY-Robin-Williams-NOT-Rated-Color-142-Minutes-A113-/221176283525?pt=US_Laserdisc&hash=item337f224185

Oh, there are two US Laserdiscs. Damn. I just got the normal Edition.

But that I can't get: "no Foreign shipping" :(

Damn, I have to search more for the extended. But thanks, now I know what to look for. I thought there is only one US LD release.

Edit: I even can't ask the seller, if he would send to Germany.

So I have to search more for the extended LD, to search for a DVD preservation.

So, after asking the seller nicely, he sold the extended LD to me and shipped it. It arrives last week, now I can search for a preservation again. :)

Maybe I'll buy or rent some DVD recorder, just to make a copy, but a well done preserveation with the movie parts (The LD Version is on 3 sides) sewed back together would be really nice.

for those interested I just bought the extended version with shipping off ebay for under 10$

there was another one up as well for $9.99, most sellers do not list it as extended, so do a search for "dead poet society laserdisc" and look at the covers. You can tell because the extended version has a red triangle in the top right stating that it is extended

Hello Original Trilogy members! Occasional lurker here, and I had to sign up when I saw this thread about DPS.

I digitized the Laserdisc (which, for the record, I own) last year at a friend's place. Got a decent result, but not nearly as nice as I would have hoped.

The recording software we used didn't crop the image, so the video has the LD's 4:3 format with black bars, and in the black bars, there's a big green bar that has image corruption. Also, there are small black borders to the left and right. In addition, since the video was recorded off the LD player without any colour correction, is it washed out. At the beginning of side 3, the video and sound are out of sync for about 30 seconds.

The video weighs over 5 GB and when I compress it (using H.264), the grain (already slightly affected by MPG compression) turns into complete mush. So I used MKVmerge to splice my 3 MPG source files together and applied parameters that crop away the ugly parts.

Now, if I play the MKV back in VLC Media Player, it reads those parameters correctly and plays the movie without the borders. I also use VLC's built-in equalizer to correct the colours and contrast and it looks okay. So I can play it back well enough (only the out of sync part remains) on my PC with a specific software and some tweaking.

But all of this is only done during playback - the original file still has washed-out videos with black borders and the corrupted green bar.

I believe people who know their video editing kung fu could do this much better. So I thought I'd revive this thread... Anybody succeed at making a nice, working DVD copy from the Laserdisc?
