My beef with the Ewoks is they are like the Gungans and the Neimoidians, a cipher for distasteful ethnic stereotypes, in this case the comedy savage (Lucas does this to real people in Temple Of Doom). If they looked cute but the reality of them was that they were a fully fledged primitive culture that have already been fighting the Imperials you have the same idea but fixed and stripped of it's distasteful undertones.

This idea is worth consideration.
