How come some torrent links on MS are no longer available?

Popularity (or lack thereof).

BitTorrent is all about playing the popularity game, even on private trackers. This is why I prefer Usenet.

Doesn't Usenets cost money every month? How incorrigibly intrusive.

It depends on whether or not your ISP offers Usenet access. If not, then so-called "premium" Usenet access (e.g., usenetserver.com) does cost money.

I see nothing "incorrigibly intrusive" about having to pay for a service from which you derive value.

Usenet is not P2P. Running an NNTP server that supports binaries is absurdly expensive.

... and it's still better than BitTorrent.
