Ok I did a quick-and-dirty capture of EPIX's VOD presentation this morning and here are the results.

...

I made a 14GB MKV (1080i/ac3) of the capture.
I wonder how well just using that capture to fill in the rest of the frame for the IMAX shots would work, or using it to fill in the aforementioned missing frames/sections of the screen that have BTS stuff in the commentary.

I'm going to be working on that tonight for sure. It's going to help so much. Even if it's a poor bitrate, we only need a tiny amount of image to cover up the BTS stuff, so hopefully it would all balance out.

All this work for a terrible movie. I love it.

I'm looking forward to this IMAX version, this is how the blu ray should have been released, along with M-I Ghost Protocol, another J.J. Abrams movie that he thinks looks better in 2.35:1.  At least with talented people like yourself this is becoming a reality, good luck.

Alright, well, I took a look at the capture and there was a LOT of bad artifacting. Is there anyway we can get someone else to capture the footage from Epix VOD? I have no capability, but I will edit it.

I've never been impressed with the quality of cable VOD, I wonder how much is the capture and how much they just compressed it for streaming.

You could probably piece together a good portion of the IMAX scenes in 1.78 from the clips that are shown in the special features(which are surprisingly long). They have a nice bitrate, too. It would require some editing though, since the center of the frame is sometimes obscured by text. Overlaying the 2.35 Blu-ray image over it should be enough to cover it up. Anything not shown in there could be patched up with the iTunes and HDTV sources. Just an idea.

I've already done that. I've pilfered through all the special features to get everything I can. We just need a good capture of the EPIX broadcast and we'll have a quality version.

Well, akiotena said,

"One more thing: the videos are unlisted, so please don't share them too widely.  Thanks."

That's why I stopped myself from sharing it on the Trek BBS ... I think the "Thomas calls Marcus" clip would have ended at least one discussion over there.

Yes, I was tempted to do the same but decided no to following Akiotena request.

The deleted scene still doesn't explain why Marcus has a CGI Constitution class starship in his office and why it has the same registry number of another starship in the movie, but... never mind. After all they deleted the scene, didn't they?

Best,

Maab

Unfortunately, the capture I did was the VOD of Verizon's FIOS. FIOS uses IP to transmit VOD content. The VOD has terrible compression in an effort to minimize bandwidth, which gives us the marco-blocking (plus frame problems that eldiablosuizo ran into) . The macro-blocking is baked in, it is not my capture. The good news is this is the "early preview" so STID hasn't actually appeared on EPIX yet (should be in a few days). Hopefully, when it premieres the regular broadcast should be much better (and hopefully 16:9). The broadcast version should be better on FIOS since the regular channels use QAM that they don't recompress the original signal (opposed to the IP for the VOD).

Hopefully someone with better equipment can capture it. I used my Hauppauge hd pvr since my HDMI capture is on the fritz. I can try to capture the broadcast version when it is on.

TrekCore says they'll be covering the rest of the scenes too, so they might have insight into the registry number.

Maybe the 16:9 "restoration" of the IMAX scenes should be moved into a new thread, to keep the bonus feature stuff at the center of this thread.

Facing the fact that there are three different english audio tracks (music during the bar scene), is there an easy way to move an audio track from one m2ts file to the other?

Just a slightly off-topic question (and apologies if something that shouldn't be asked here), but I can't find a way to search the site -- I'm interested in looking into making an edit for Star Trek: Insurrection using some of the deleted scenes that didn't make it to the DVDs (like the one of Quark at the end of the movie). I read somewhere a 'workprint' of an early cut of the film is out there someplace, does anybody have a clue as to where I might look to find that footage?

A lot of turbulence tearing through this thread. Could you make a new thread for that?

FYI - Feel free to share the YouTube links now.  I'm making them public... someone on Tumblr caught wind of our thread.  :)

Also, I don't know how complete it is or if it even has anything to do with what you guys are putting together here, but there is a collection of extras at TPB.

It’s really sad when the “creative minds” behind something we hold dear are also guilty of its destruction.

On TPB video downloaded from youtube. And quality of this varies from 290p with Chinese watermarks till 720p with freezing of video so we don't need it.

Any word on this project? I see akiotena has taken the videos down; hope it's just because somebody abused the privilege and they'll go back up soon.

I got C&D'd by Paramount.  Not pushing my luck.  :)

There was a deleted scene I found on YouTube showing a model of a TOS era ship hanging in the room Admiral Marcus was in. Now it's gone.
