While I agree that such is extremely disappointing, I don't think it's right to humiliate someone for failure.  I've beaten you at several games of chess, the last two with a handicap in your favor, and often due to some serious error in judgment on your part that cost you the whole game.  But I don't rub it in your face.  I encourage you.  I challenge you again because that's how you get better.  To improve a player, you don't destroy their morale.  You build it up and encourage.

So, is it over? Did Putin ride bare chested on a giant horse through the closing ceremonies or anything?

Where were you in '77?

I vote we have the Winter Olympics in Uganda soon (maybe next spring).

Lets withdraw the US (£240m) and UK (£350m) aid (£590m/$982m), as it is about equal to their entire annual defense expenditure... see how the Ugandan President likes that ;-)

It is over, but no Putin did not ride bare chested on a giant horse.

I didn't humiliate anyone,  it is doubtful any of the hockey players on either team read this forum.   As for our games of chess.  They just games between friends.  There is a big difference between them and representing your country at the Olympics.  Also keep in mind that the players on the men's team are professional NHL players.  As for improving a player, sometimes he needs a pat on the back and sometimes he needs a kick in the a**.  Additionally, the object isn't to improve the player, it is to improve the team.  Yes you can do that by improving the players.  But you can also do that by replacing the players/coaches.  Finally, yeah, I was a bit hard on them.   I just hate it when my sports teams lose.   It makes me angry.  It especially makes me angry when we get eliminated by the same country over and over again.

 Prove it.

I prefer Winter Olympics to be held in colder environments(colder than Sochi).

I couldn't care less if it is cold or not. Ice Hockey can be played anywhere. Besides Ice Hockey, there are only a few sports that interest me.

Still Winter Olympics are far better than Summer Olympics, in which I have zero interest (I don't think I watched even a single minute of it when they were held in London).

I have never watched any Olympics (aside from clips of a few seconds long that I catch here and there...

However, I just wanted to make the observation that this thread had 111 posts and 999 views at the same time, just a few seconds ago.

Thank you for your time. ;)

From what I heard, he was going to, but then his advisors informed him that gay men were lining the streets of Sochi to get pictures, so he decided against it.

Warbler was going to prove it but his advisors convinced him not to?  Interesting.

Now that it's over, stray thoughts...

On the Half-Pipe, why don't they get rid of that sharp, horizontal lip that runs down the top of both sides??? They could add another 60 degree incline to step it back or place some kind of cushions along there or some-such. watching that sort of painful and dangerous collision doesn't enhance my viewing experience.

They throw out the highest and lowest judge's scores everytime in some events. Figure Skating and Ice Dancing are the most popular events. If there are 8 judges scoring a preformance, the 2 highest and the 2 lowest could be tossed each time. It could be refined further by awarding a fifth score that is out of whack with the other 3 only a certain percentage of the difference. But maybe they like this sort of controversy.

I enjoyed the sledding and ice racing more than I expected. Even so, Figure Skating/Dancing, Half-Pipe Trick-Skiing/Boarding, and the Downhill Slolome Racing were the events that I'd go out of my way to see.

Ice racing must be some non-American term for speed skating.

So, how long before most of Sochi ends up looking like the set of The Walking Dead? I give it a year. ;)

Were there any attempted terrorist attacks that made the news? I only know of one that didn't (make it to the news, that is)...

I really enjoyed the new snowboard racing events.  I still don't care for the half-pipe, and I really found it difficult to watch the new half-pipe with skis event -- that just looked like it was designed to blow out people's knees.  But those racing events with 5 or 6 boarders racing over those jumps, now that was the first Olympic boarding event that I went out of my way to watch whenever it was on.
