I signed a local petition to keep a murderer who murdered a (random) black person (that he'd never met) in prison.
He had been heard saying with his friends "Let's get us a nigger" and they killed a random black guy they found, not knowing he was actually a very upstanding member of the community. (not that that's all that odd, but to his mind he probably couldn't imagine it).
And this was in the 60's/70's, so I'm actually quite proud of my hometown for putting him in jail instead of just letting it go as was quite common back then. (Not here, but in other areas of the country at that time)
