Minor inconsistincies can be explained/retconned away by Chee and Hidalgo, outright contradictions like Chewie being alive in an Episode VII set 40 years after RotJ cannot.

The Chewie in Vector Prime is a clone ;)

A minor inconsistency is Bossk not eating reptiles vs. Bossk eating reptiles or Leia building her own lightsaber prior to The Corellian Trilogy vs. never having built her own lightsaber by the time of The Corellian Trilogy -- the Sith starting off as a species that was conquered by exiled Dark Jedi vs. the Sith being an organization of fifty-some darksiders created by a rogue Jedi Master is not.

That said, I think it would be a bit hypocritical of Abrams to ignore Chewie's death after chaining himself to the death of Kirk in Generations as the reason for not including Shatner in the new Trek movies. It would also be kind of a dick move on the part of LFL and Disney to just go "Hey, remember how we killed off Chewie and it was a really big deal? Well, we need to maximize our profits on these new movies, so, guess what? It never happened! Sorry!"

To me, whether or not Chewie is in the movie has absolutely zero bearing on how good the movie will actually be.

As has been stated in this thread by myself and others, hopefully we'll find out soon.

Kirk dying onscreen, and Chewie dying in a novel are two entirely different things.

And Abrams did have a scene at one point, where Shatner would have had a cameo in Trek '09.  For various reasons, it was never filmed.

Kirk was revived by the Borg in the novels anyway. :P

How would you all feel about the Disney sale and the ST if there was no EU, SE, or PT?

I'd be super pumped. MORE Star Wars?! Imagine the INFINITE possibilities!

Even a Star Wars fan like me just heard about Chewie's death. I don't know how he died in the books. I don't know anything. It's almost like a rumor to me. So of course Chewie is alive for the general public.

The only thing that could make JJ not using Chewie is that Peter is not in good shape these days. So maybe JJ could say something like "Hey, Peter can't do Chewie anymore. Do we really want someone else instead? If the answer is no, then let's do as in the novels. He died long ago."

I would be majorly excited.  Imagine the possibility of new Star Wars _without_ the decades of GL and KJA, Et al. fucking ruining it!  I'd probably be a little more nervous about what they are going to do with it due to not already having witnessed the depths to which Star Wars can sink with GL helming, but I think it would still be an incredible event that I would be beside myself looking forward to.

Chewie died in a book?  So what?  Should not matter one bit.

I'm the kind of nerd who loved the mini-episode of Doctor Who "Night of the Doctor" because of what I perceived as charitable acknowledgement of the audio dramas that the neglected 8th Doctor has been featured in.

Charley, C'rizz, Lucie, Tamsin, Molly, friends, companions I've known...I salute you. And Cass, I apologize. Physician, heal thyself.

Sorry, nerded out for a sec.  ;-)   I agree, by the way.  A nod to the followers of EU is nice.  I don't expect it or judge based on it, but it is a nice gesture. That said; Star Wars is so dirty it will be hard to reconcile every corner of the 200+ novels.  Made even dirtier by the creator\previous owner.  Considering how little he understood about the very universe and characters he created, it's no wonder the EU is all over the map for continuity.

They're better off just going with a new story that doesn't try to shoehorn itself into either of the two trilogies. name-check a few people or events and take us on a new adventure.

Honestly, as McFadden mentioned, it can't possibly be any worse than the cartoon software advertisement the last three films were when Lucas was in charge.

All the while, Lucas himself was saying ....

For thirty years Lucas has been saying all sorts of bullshit.  I cannot imagine there has ever been, or will ever be, a bigger liar than Lucas.  He just says whatever fits the interview at the time.  He seems to have no regard what so ever for any source proving otherwise.

It's going to be twelve films...I never said it was going to be twelve films.

It's going to be nine films...I never said it was going to be nine films.

It's the adventures of Luke Skywalker...It's always been the arc of Vader.

Vader isn't Luke's father...Vader has always been Luke's father.

Etc, etc, etc...ad nauseam.

He might as well just sit down with an interviewer and burp the alphabet. His statements are that meaningless.

Vector Prime got a lot of publicity when it was published in 1999. IIRC, it was the only EU novel to have a tv spot.

I know Chewie's death in the book got some media attention. Not to mention the author reportedly got threatening letters from fans.

Whether casual fans and moviegoers even remember this 15 years later is unclear.

I find it pathetic that the first and only Star Wars novel to receive advertising on television is an entry from one of the worst Star Wars series ever.

It wasn't the first. I distinctly remember seeing commercials for The Hutt Gambit and Rebel Dawn. I don't remember seeing any after Vector Prime, though.

"Details about his character are unknown except that Driver's would be similar to Star Wars' biggest villain, Darth Vader."

Much as I grow tired of certain members' tirades on this subject, I must admit reading this actually does make me worry as to the plot of these sequels.  Hey, at least we know he's not Vader.
