Fantasia 1982 Soundmix — Page 5

Yeah, I think you hit the nail right on the head. I think the severe edits they made to the second movement were quick and dirty, and not at all what the "original" original 1941 version looked like. As a result, the audio is out of sync in a few places, even in the Stokowski version. Really too bad, not only from a historical standpoint, but from an artistic view as well...

Here's the entire Pastoral. Man, it was a chore! Anyway, it's finished, and all I have left is the Night on Bald Mountain and Ave Maria sequence. Other than that, everything else is finished.

Here's the Ave Maria sequence. I only have to fix a couple of parts in the Night on Bald Mountain sequence and then I'm finished! :)

Still looking for about five people to help me "proof" it, if you will. I know it's a daunting task (since this is the roadshow version...) but even if you can only do one section/sequence I would greatly appreciate the help. I should be ready to start rendering/sharing the test file tonight.

That said, I'm ready to start working on menus and such. Anybody have any experience with that? I'd also maybe like to do the audio track with both soundtracks running in mono (as SpacedRanger suggested) but have no idea where to start. Any ideas?

Hi. If you want to do the dual soundtrack, you have this into acount:

Both sound tracks have different cues in different places especially if they were recorded live. If you try to synchronyse both sound together, some will end up with messed up pitches (too slow and too fast) which wiil show in the final piece. That's why I was suggesting to do both sound separately on two different channel and just try to edit a bit the image.

What app do you use to edit ?

Begin with the smaller stuff while synchronizing (Deems Taylor' s narations, for exemple).

That's it for today. Let me know if there's anything else.

By the way, I checked you new vimeos and they look gread. Good work.

I think I have the soundtracks set up the way you suggest. The 1941 version is on the "L" portion of the audio board of the editor, while the 1982 version is on the "R" portion of the audio board of the editor. They are hard and soft edited to each other in Sony Vegas Pro 10 (the editor I'm using...)

I'll have to learn how to synchronize the audio for the Deems Taylor portions - there's a few places where he gets out of sync with himself (or drops narration in the case of the narration sourced from the '91 VHS).

Thanks for the feedback!

OK, here's the file for anyone who wants to check it out: https://vimeo.com/85417047

If you do check it out, I'd really appreciate timecodes for any parts you have comments/concerns about. Thanks in advance for anyone who participates!

The video quality is ****, just because I wanted to keep file size down. I intend to use the full video quality I have available to me in the final version.

At this point, I'm kind of torn on the Deems Taylor narration. I think I'll pose the question to the forum, but I'm almost leaning toward having 5 tracks on the disc: the 1941 score/new narration, the 1982 score/new narration, the 1941 score/restored narration, the 1982 score/restored narration, and the 1941/1982 scores, L & R channel. The jump between original/restored is really jarring... What do you think?

Hi. Before entering into a thorough examination of your video, I want to let you know that your final video is at 30 fps. Is it the same for your source video ? If yes, you might want it to be converted it back to 24 fps instead since the IK score might be synchronized to this framerate, which would explain why you are having a hard time for the synchronisation, unless it's a reconversion from Vimeo, which might compromise the data taken with a timecode (I have downloaded the video and opened it in Adobe Premiere in order to provide more precisions for the examination, that's how I found out).

Hmmm... I hadn't even considered the frame differences... I know that the video is at 29 fps (rounded to 30) in my source (supposedly a rip of the newest BD). I didn't change this, as I wasn't even thinking of that at the time...

However, I'm pretty sure that isn't the cause of the synch problems - some of the Nutcracker suite matched perfectly...

Some pieces will match, more or less, of course, but with the framerate differences, it will still be a problem. But also, remember the IK soundtrack was probably not recorded live for the cd. I know that the frame fate of the BR is at 24 (23.976), so, try to see if there is a way to get the original stream unconverted (use tsmuxer for that as a m2ts file) and open it in vegas. See if there's a difference with the IK soundtrack. I'm sur a great deal of your trouble will be solved. One more thing, be carefull with the noise reduction with the vhs sound, if you over do it, it'll be crappy, but the vhs noise ca be distracting if you try to match it with the music. That's why I recommand to get the LD collector's edition  and it's bonuses.

No, I don't know if that is the reason... I know that they probably synced it to the 24fps one, but at this point (since I converted the audio to match a 29fps stream, making it the same pitch and tempo as the original recording) unless there's a problem with the video being 29fps I think I'm inclined to leave it that way...

Also, I totally blanked on the original Deems Taylor audio. That was ripped from an LD. Why it would be ripped from a VHS is beyond me... :)

I don't think I'm going to do noise reduction at all, but possibly... What is the general consensus on that?

Shouldn't matter, because with telecining, those 29.97 fps are actually running at the same speed as the 23.976 fps material...

Cool... Thanks for that clarification, Molly. I didn't want to have to start from scratch! :)

5 different tracks would be pretty amazing. I myself only ever watch the laserdisc, knowing the voice coming out this man isn't his own is too distracting haha.

Hello jade88. Which version of the LD do you have of Fantasia ?

Author

The deluxe CAV Laserdisc Monks. Is there another version on LD?

How good is the video quality on your reconstruction and where can i find it?
