 lol I feel bad now
Mike's just this guy, you know?

I love that when he's done, he's going to do exactly what I had hoped he'd do and present it to Disney/LFL and say "here, I did this for you, release it." After watching some of the techniques and the level of detail he's going into, I don't think I'd be satisfied with anything less.

I'm glad he posted that. I found it very enlightening. I never really investigated the project, assuming it was DVD or BR sourced and would remain private. In that case, why bother keeping tabs on it?
BUT, if it's a hardcore 4k remastering done by someone with the means that has a shot at pitching to Lucasfilm, well... that's a bantha of a different color.

I am not, nor have I ever been, a hater. I've just been uninterested. So I'm glad for the clarification, and hope the project achieves its goal.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Well, it looks like it was DVD-sourced in the beginning, and then he got film?

Yep!

How can it be dvd sourced if he's been doing it for 15 years?  Laserdisc maybe?

IDK what he did before 2004, but his original plan was to "fix" the 2004 DVD release. Possibly via a Harmy-esque despecialization.

Take a look at the archive on his website.

JEDIT: You might be right about the Laserdisc source. See: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/StarWarsLegacy-com-The-Official-Thread/post/72578/#TopicPost72578

My favorite quote: "If (my favorite film) was the Godfather, I'd have horse's heads everywhere."

I have always been a supporter, but this video was a very mature response to certain opposition. Good work.

Thanks, guys...  the project began as an SD thing (!), and grew over the years as I got better and better access.

But for the real dirt - all the sordid details - register at the forum and get the password to the live show tonight if you can.  I guarantee whether you support Legacy or not, you'll learn some interesting stuff! :)

A question that someone else asked, but I'll restate it: Why is the "a" in the word "that" in "that can save her people" wonky? It looks like it's broken into two halves which are shifted away from each other. The letter "d" in custodian almost seems like it's similarly broken - the vertical bar looks a little too high? And I feel like I can "draw" an imaginary straight line between the two breaks...

Since you worked so long on this, I don't feel comfortable assuming that this was a mistake on your part, so are those the actual letterforms at that position in the crawl? Why would they be "broken up" like that?

Great eye.  One of the things which would frustrate a truly obsessive "crawl-recreator" is that the original element has photographic warps in it as it travels.  The warps are non-uniform and hard to detect but you can see them if you really look.  For example, from the bottom edge of the frame to about a 1/3rd of the way up, the letterforms actually compress and stretch in height like a spring a couple of times.  There are also horizontal pinches and stretches which happen over the animation.  This is why, to preserve the original crawl, I have to register my frames to the originals.  The way I even detected this in the first place was because I was tracking a single frame of the letterforms on top of the original ones, and where mine were perfectly proportioned, I could easily see the ones below stretching and pulling and shrinking, etc.  Now, remember I'm not talking about them moving around in space or jittering; I'm talking about the actual dimensions and proportions of the original letters changing frame-by-frame over the animation.  So if you were just going to do a crawl recreation, you'd lose all that, especially near the end of the sequence, where the letterforms exhibit a lot of these sorts of quirks and they're different each frame.  If I get a chance, I'll stabilize/lock one of the lines of text in place, so you can see all the warping stuff that happens to it over its run.

Thanks for the explanation! Even looking at the redone Episode IV crawl on VHS as a kid, I do remember noticing that the letters looked like they were "moving" when they were in the distance. Now I understand why.

Mike, I have to applaud your for that video, truly excellent. The problem with forums (and emails) is that it is very hard to insert any kind of tone into a post. I am being sincere right now, but it would be just as easy to read this as being sarcastic, they are just words on a screen and it is up to the reader to give them tone, and they don't always read it in the same tone it was written - which often leads to arguments, rants and bad feelings unnecessarily.

By creating your video, you managed to get around that issue, and I suspect earned a lot more respect here than you had before, or would have by simply typing up your well thought out and heartfelt response, so well done.

I see no reason why Disney would not want to turn your efforts into a Blu-ray release and make a little money, but as I understand it, they would have to secure permission from or co-operate with 20th Century Fox, which owns distribution rights to both Trilogies until 2020, and Star Wars in perpetuity. Given Fox's reluctance to co-operate with Marvel over the X-Men franchise, I see this as the biggest obstacle between you, Disney and an official release of your work:

Maybe you can work something out with Fox. In any case, good luck to you and I wish you all the best. Looking forward to the live show tonight,

Williarob.

Great video Mike, but I still think it needs work, the colors on R2 look wrong to me! And that guy talking, I'm almost sure he wasnt in the original release. :-)

Sorry that this is my first post, but I thought you might want to know it's extremely easy to find and download what I assume are the videos you sent harmy. I also found a dickpic that I hope was meant for Winnie cooper.

If you found a dick pic, it wasn't mine, unfortunately I don't have a good explanation for who's it would be.  Let's start some nice Gay rumors.  Also, if you've found access to my server, maybe it would be cool to let me know privately how, and not broadcast the titillating prospect for other, um, dicks.

(I think) I found what he's talking about as well.  Though I haven't found a dick pic yet.

PM sent, Mike.

(P.s. What's wrong with a gay rumor?)

(P.s.s. Not everyone knows how to use private messaging here...which is silly, I know, but, you know, guy might have actually been trying to help out)
