Maybe some hope, recent interview with lucas

Author

Hi, just came across this article today. At the end of the article theres a Q&A with lucas and he is asked if the originals will be released since they are only available on vhs and vhs will eventually be obsolete, maybe its just a matter of time, but lucas is slime so who knows.

"Drink the Kool-Aid. Wear blinders. Cover your ears. Because that's the only way you can totally enjoy Revenge of the Sith -- the final and most futile attempt from skilled producer, clumsy director and tin-eared writer George Lucas to create a prequel trilogy to match the myth-making spirit of the original Star Wars saga he unleashed twenty-eight years ago. Fan boys, of course, have convinced themselves otherwise. So have several critics, if you go by early reviews."

I dont get any reassurance out of that. Its more of the same from GL.

Not to shoot you down though, thanks for the article. Its got some interesting perspective on THX, which sadly has also been changed for the worse, IMO.

Interesting interview, and maybe a faint glimmer of hope. However, after seeing the documentary on the bonus disk of the new trilogy dvds, I've just about lost all hope. He's adamant that these are HIS movies and that he'll do with them whatever he wants. Of course, he's only saying that because LOADS of people are still BUYING THEM...so he's feeling justified right about now. It seems that those of us who signed the petition here are Lucas' fleas...we just annoy him, but don't represent any real deterrent to him. Lucas would've been NOTHING (compared to what he is now) if it weren't for those of us who supported him when Starwars first came out. We made him wealthy. And now, the wealth has gone to his head. As long as people keep buying the stuff, he'll keep doing things 'his way'. It's not like his fans were complaining that his movies weren't good enough or 'complete'...it's always been HIM complaining. Weren't these always considered the greatest movies of all time...even BEFORE the changes?? Now, there is no more loyalty to the fans who put him where he is today...and that is sad. And I always thought that the most important rule in show business was to 'give the fans what they want'. End of rant.

DB: You've said the last time you would issue the original versions was on VHS several years ago. But with VHS potentially becoming obsolete one day, will you release them on DVD?

GL: I don't know. I mean, when VHS becomes obsolete it will probably get released on DVD, I imagine. But I'm not going to spend the effort to restore them (to) what I consider to be the real film.

Lucas does sound like he's giving in a bit there. He seems to concede that VHS is not a viable option for the fans who want the original cuts on a durable format. I know he says that he wouldn't put the effort into restoring them, but they're 90% done already. I don't believe somebody as anal about his work as Lucas would allow even his disavowed original cuts on the market in anything less than a stellar presentation.

And say what you want about Lucas, but the man has fabulous hair. You have to give him that.

This statement made my heart flutter. Literally. I'm sure Sam_Lu will be in here momentarily, childishly ripping into Lucas for... whatever... but I don't care if Lucas is agreeing with us or just caving in. I want those movies on DVD (nice and official like) and any realistic hope of getting them is a good thing.

And yes, the man does have fabulous hair.

Yeah it'll happen, eventually.

I just hope he hasn't eroded his fanbase by then. There's really no need for us to be venomous towards GL, but then I'm not kneeling down in front of him either.

He has to realise that HIS OWN statements about film preservation for our children are going to haunt him until he relents.

And yeah Lucas's hair is a thing of wonderment.

I wouldn't be so sure on that Lethe, in the space of a few weeks we've gone from George saying flatly that the original films don't exist anymore! , to they will " probably get released on DVD " as far as his comments about bothering to restore them, judging by the look of the abundance of clips of the original versions that appear in Empire of Dreams, I would say that alot of the restoration work has already been done. Now whether this change of heart is due to the fact that he's slowly bowing to the pressure from his fans and Fox to release the originals, or whether it was his (original vision) to get everyone to buy the version he wants us to see, and then 12 months down the track
(most likely 2007) get us to shell out another $60 to own the original versions.

Now as much as i'd like to think that the old guy was mellowing, the cynic in me thinks it has more to with clever marketing, either way I'll be first in line when VHS becomes obsolete, that day can't be too far away.

I was about to say something about all of us stealing and destroying the world's VHS players myself! I've been waiting for VHS to die for a while... I think the general push towards DVD has done nothing but good for movie buffs thus far, and if this holds true then the push will be even better.

I mean, besides not deteriorating, great picture & sound, scene & language selection, bonus features, and no need to rewind, why should I choose a DVD over a perfectly good video that costs $1 less?

VHS costs $10 less, most DVD's bonus features are either non-existant or worthless, and nobody uses the Chapter and Language Selection anyways.

I like DVD video and sound but I hate the menus and associated garbage. Just play the damn movie.

OK, so, maybe he might approve a O-OT release if it requires no work from GL at all, and reverts all the profits to him. Sounds fair.

Maybe there's a glimmer of hope.

Just imagine how much more GL can potentially tap into? There's a huuugggge demand for the O-OT. The fan polls and the petition are the indicators.

And yes, George has great hair. He's aged well.

Im wondering if I read the same article or what? I totally missed that Q&A the first time through...weird. After seeing that it does seem that George is conceding - at least a little. I tend to think that if he were releasing the OT on DVD he would put effort into it, as previously stated he is very anal about his work.
I have to completely retract my first statement - this is the best news regarding the OT ive heard in months. Sorry to everyone about that comment since it was retarded. I dont understand how I missed that part of the interview.

Anywhat, here is to our newly restored (no pun intended) hope.

Well, well, well. At long last a glimmer of hope. Not to rain on the parade, but how many times has Lucas said one thing and done just the opposite? I'll keep my fingers crossed that this might be the one time he actually sticks with what he says.

And yes he has great hair.

Not to mention highly feasible.

I mean come on guys, that statement was simply a political angle, so that he wouldn't get raked over the coals for his 'they can buy the OT on VHS" slam. Lucas may be a simpering old fool, but he knows how to market.

What Lucas is really saying here, is that if Magical Fairies do all the work for him, then the O-OT might get put on DVD at around 2020.

Break out the champagne!!!

Have some hope Sam, we need to maintain optimism. You seem unwilling to find a silver lining.

P.S. Please dont reference my first post on this thread, since ive gone back and retracted that statement.
