The last couple of times this sort of thing happened to me, on 2 different computers, it was the motherboard (or Moth3rboard ?) that was going bad.

I suppose that could be the case for me.   Whatever it is, it probably won't be worth it to do the repair job because the computer is so old.   I only thing I really care about is saving the info on the harddrive.    I was backing it up, but the back up hard drive failed awhile back and I never got around to replacing it. : (

Did you try booting holding down F12 with a bootdisc in the drive or or on USB?

If none of these fixes get your system limping, you can just pull out the HDD and keep it in an enclosure.

If the problem is a mobo issue, then you really are better off skipping the repair shop and just buying a new computer, since that's what you'd be doing if you got it fixed anyway--replacing a mobo that old means you have to replace everything else, too, because it won't be compatible. Might as well just pull out the hardware that will still be useful (on a 10-year-old computer, that's probably only your HDD, but I don't know what you might have put into it over the years) and use it in your next computer.

boy am I stupid.  I forgot there was link to request a new password.  Moth3r reminded me.  I got a new password and can now access my original account.  The mods can do what they want with the temp account.   Boy do I feel embarrassed.

No worries, Warbler. Locking up the temp account now.

Why don't you give it a try?

At worst your old computer remains frazzled and at best it's fully recovered and works better than before.

In between are a world of possibilities (like recovering lost data to put onto a new computer).

Good luck.
