While the cleaning is surprisingly effective, I like the defects.

Man I love looking at frames in a decent resolution, all that lovely grain and detail. I just wish Team Negative1 would do the same as you and post some frames from the reels they're working on in a decent resolution like these frames here to get us all excited.

That ICE does do a great job but with a bit of eyeballing on my part, I can definately see a loss of sharpness, albeit its very subtle but most importantly the grain is still very much there, pretty much exactly as it is in the original frame.

With a slight sharpen filter applied you should be able to get the ICE frame looking like the original frame, in which case I would personally go with scanning it with ICE enabled because it does look much cleaner and so many defects every frame could get distracting when the video is in motion. It's not like ICE gets rid of all the defects either, just the most noticable ones so you'll still have that cinematic feel. :)

<3 film

I love film too, this is why my next purchase for film will be a 35mm projector :D

(I have to find a cinema who's throwing out their 35mm equipment, in France they're keeping it alongside their digital equipment for the moment in the vast majority of theaters, just in case they have to show a film that isn't available in digital)

This way it will be possible for me to see my reels the way it was meant to, through a projector !!

For the scan, maybe it'll be possible to do both versions, the cleaned and the dirty one, but of course you'll have to wait two times longer for the release. Do you all prefer to wait longer and have both versions ?

Why don't you release the dirty version first and the cleaned version after?

So this is the beginning of my preservation project for these trailers. First I have to scan my reels, I decided to use my nikon film scanner (coolscan IV ED, LS-40).

I disassembled my scanner to see how it will be possible to scan my reels with it. That black plastic thing going to the right is where the films goes through, it continues to the rear end of the case:

So I just have to make a hole in the scanner's case to let the film out. You can see the marking where I'll have to make the hole:

That way i will be able to have each part of the reel on both sides of the scanner. What is already scanned on the back, what have to be scanned on the front.

I'll post images of the setup once i have finished meddling with the scanner.

Are you still going to post some shots of your final setup after modifying the scanner insert?  I would love to see how it looks with the film moving through it.  I may purchase one of these myself for a few trailers I have so I have been watching this thread to glean any info I can.

Thanks

The cleaning is done by the scanning software, so it easier for me to scan twice each frame (with and without cleaning) than rescan the whole reel with other settings.

I'm quite busy with my studies for the moment (my exams are near) but the project isn't dead. I just wait to have more free time to start the scanning.

I started the scanning today. There should be enough to make a few seconds of video soon. I'll post it here so you can see it ;)

I have a Nikon Coolscan V. and a pakon f235 plus scanner. Scans at 2000 dpi. a roll in 5 mins.  Actually has a mode for scanning long rolls. I am very interested in your methodology for scanning, and how did u crop and combine the frames ? Do you plan to have sound ? I too wanted to scan a star wars trailer, but it's so expensive on ebay and hard to find. is there any service that loans the film.. so you can scan and return it.. instead of buying it ?
