^ Yes.  Andrea, I think we have reached the stage at which you have to decide which you like the best and encode.  Otherwise, we'll end up going round in circles.

Well, after so many tests, and the opinions of all, I reached the conclusion that HaloClean2 + MagicUp is the best compromise (IMHO, of course) *in this very moment*... maybe in a month, maybe in a year, I will find a better solution - even if I'm pretty sure it will be hard, as I think it's quite impossible to do better than this, with laserdisc as video source.

The lossless video is ready; I just have to work with the soundtracks... this evening I'm really tired, so for the first time in some months, I will not touch avisynth and/or virtualdub... "Sacrilege!!!" someone will yell (-^,) I know, I know... but I'm human, after all (am I? or feline?!? dunno...) - I'll be back to work ASAP.

I'm back to work with BATB; sync'ing the BD and the final video, I noted that sometimes the BD has more image than laserdisc on the sides, while other times the BD has the image cropped top and bottom... see for example the next two frames, that are one after the other:

according to IMDB:

Aspect Ratio

1.66 : 1 (negative ratio)
1.50 : 1 (IMAX version)
1.85 : 1 (intended ratio)

so, it's odd that the BD uses both 1.85:1 and cropped 1.66:1, while the laserdisc uses only the 1.66:1 not cropped... maybe an expert could write he something more about this.

The LD is definitely film sourced, while the BD is sourced from the CAPS files, after they were adjusted for the IMAX release, so it has been framed slightly differently, depending on the scene.

Disney is notoriusly an eco-friendly company; infact, they decided to plant a new tree for their BATB Blu-ray release…

Zuh?  What possible...  I mean, huh?

Maybe Leonard Maltin can start releasing tins of untouched Disney films as a series for collectors.

Guess they felt the composition of the scene was a little empty.  Weird stuff.

This is only a particular I noted during the sync... I cannot think about what other things they changed in this, and in all other films... it's creeping... well, it's true that we can live with an added tree, but the fact is that we want the movie AS IT WAS! Isn't true? It's a matter of principle!

For BATB, they changed colors, mixed cropping, repainted things, remixed soundtracks... there will be an end to all of this? I think our child DESERVE the right to watch ALL the Disney films as they were originally - and we too!

...clearly Disney don't want that any thing into its films reminds another studio's logo, so they decided to remove something here...

Here I am! Today will be a BATB day, so I will start it proposing my little color correction, to avoid that pink blanket present on the laserdisc.

Opinions are welcome!

I haven't even noticed the pink blanket before, but when compared to the WIP print, it is very noticeable. A very good change, IMO.

Be carefull with this pinkish/purpleish blanket, in some places, removing it too much removes some original elements from the images (see picture 1 & 2 for exemples). I know that might be quite a lot, but I think the best in that case (among others) is grading each shots individualy instead of grading the whole film once.

On the same subject, this could explain why the so called "special edition" is lacking this pinkish / purpleish colour that appear throughout the LD/vhs. But was this colour element part of the origimal film or purely accidental (like fade issue, for exemple) ?

Can anybody here, please, answer to that question ?

I darkened a bit the image, but details should be there now.

About the fact that this pink blanket should be there: really I don't know; some expert is needed to answer this question.

I must add that it may be due to the actual film degradation, and the telecine process brought it to video...

I see no noticeable lost detail, at least on the enlarged samples, so it could be the previous sample's compression.

I'm near the completion, but I need someone who can help me with subtitles...

I have all the needed idx/sub files, but don't know how to mux in the final .m2ts file; TSMuxer don't accept it, EasyBD lite neither...

I thought also to OCR them, then let the software re-render them; but this conversion will probably lead to some errors...

Suggestions?

Wow!  I always thought that there was still something a little off about the Laserdisc; glad to see you're working to fix that.

Hi, _,,,^..^,,,_ (Andrea, I think ?). Did you managed to get the original french LD (this one: http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/32562/22/1325/Belle-et-la-b%C3%AAte-La-%281991%29) ? This one contains the original (theatrical) french dub. Now today, what pass for this on dvd and BR is shortened version, with new voice actors, re-made for the the special edition released nearly 10 years later.

Do you think you can track down a copy of this LD & recuperate the audio for preservation & use in your project ?

Thanks to let me know

Well, this is an interesting thing... but I'm afraid I have not that french LD!

If some other french user would like to capture it, I will add that track to the final project, but I need to know ASAP as probably I should re-encode the video to accomodate all the files into a BD-25!

***   ***   ***   ***   ***

I watched by myself the movie two days ago... my daughter was not interested, despite the fact I've started this project also thinking about her... well, I must check the video, so I continued to watch it... and, I discovered I haven't seen it before! I watched so many movies, TV series and cartoons during my whole life, and I was sure I had seen it, but with my own surprise, this was the first time!

OK, video is quite good, it doesn't seem from a laserdisc, and resolution is satisfactory, even if not razor-sharp as late animation; color grading is right; I have noted three or four frames with very minor drop outs found in the original source, but they are so little that probably only one will be noted during a normal (read: watched only for pleasure, and not to spot out every single possible error) view, and is not so annoying; I could fix it, it's true, but to me is like a flaw that adds that "vintage" look that I love! The only thing that I noted is colors are sometimes muted - in comparison to BD - but I think they are well balanced and not overly exagerated...

At the end, a good result for a LD based project.

And, by the way, I LOVED the story!
