He was pretty good in the Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai too. Plus, I always imagine Frink in wooly chaps anyway.

OK, so far, I've got feedback on the scripts from three people, so I call tomorrow as a deadline for anyone who wants to give me their comments on them and then I'll be sending them out for recording.

Stuff came up for me, so I doubt I'll meet that deadline.  I'll try to be more prompt the next time.

EDIT:  Unless...  Would you like to put out a version of the script with the compiled changes included?  If so, we could sign off on a nearer to complete version, making sure all the changes sound good together and no new issues slipped in, etc.

It's ok, I never expected to hear back from everyone; I of all people understand that other more important things can come up :-)

When you preview the menu in multiAVCHD, it shows only six tracks in that small box but that is only static preview with no actual functions, so I thought maybe, when you create the menu, it might actually scroll down to the others but I have yet to figure out a way to test this without actually creating and burning the whole disc.

Why don't you cut the mkv down to the first 5 minutes, call it Source and use that as the source when running the Bluray build?

When happy with the result, run the build on the full mkv renamed as Source.

The only difference between the two will be the number of chapter markers and the length/size.

Been showing my brother in law Star Wars for the first time. His introduction wouldn't have been as great without you Harmy. We're gonna finish up the trilogy tomorrow with ROTJ.

He had only ever seen Episode 1, which is odd, because he's older than me, so I would've expected him to have been familiar with the films long before the prequels.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

There are 120 seeders right now.

I'm doing something wrong, then. Thanks, I'll look into it...

The video stream will be exactly the same as the MKV, so I'm definitely sticking with v2.5.

I don't see any reason for confusion (or additional confusion - there will be questions like "what's the difference between the MKV and the BD" either way). It will be the BD release of v2.5, and the v2.5 MKV is kind of like an iTunes or Netflix release - they are not different versions of the film, just different release formats.

To clarify, will the BD have a higher-bitrate video encode or will it use the exact same M2TS as the MKV? Thanks.

Hi Harmy.
French TV channel M6 is currently doing a Star Wars marathon in HD. Of course they're airing the SEs, BUT NOT the 2011 Blu-ray version. IE, R2D2 is NOT hiding behind his rock and Ben's scream is not changed if I'm not mistaken. I recorded it on my computer just in case, and will record Empire next tuesday and ROTJ the week after that, as I know you're using such SE HD footage to undo some of the Blu-ray changes. Let me know if you're interested in these. Only thing is it's horribly sped up. Good luck with school and other things in life.

Please bear with me if I tend to get too excited about anything or say too much, I have issues.

Versions pre-2.0 were sourced from an HDTV airing of the 2004 SEs, which is what this sounds like. I'm not sure it would be any use to Harmy, but you could start another thread to see if anyone else would like to take a look at it.

Yeah, unless the bitrate is like super high, which I doubt it would be, there's no point really.

Hmm, I would be interested in this if these versions were superior in image quality to the 15gb german hdtv transport streams (the highest quality pre blu-ray SE editions that i'm aware of). Can you compare the clip below taken from the german hdtv stream to what you've recorded and see whether what you've recorded is superior in terms of image quality?

Well it's 1080p @7339 kbps according to Media Info... But some people complained it was a DVD upscale after ROTS aired last week.

I suspected they would air the 2004 master since when I first watched SW in 1993 it was on the same channel, and they used the 1977 version then (some guy uploaded to YouTube the opening he recorded on that day).

The bitrate of the german hdtv transport stream is 16000 kbps so its very unlikely that what you've recorded looks better. Somebody looking for a french hdtv release of star wars with french scroll and subtitles might be interested in your versions though.

Well a higher bitrate doesn't necessarily mean a better quality. For example it looks like there is less grain in my version, but while comparing both clips, I just realized they cropped the picture. I am uploading a clip of the same segment to my mega account so you can look by yourself, but I think there is no point in keeping this as you and Harmy said. I just wanted to be helpful mostly for Empire and ROTJ as I knew of this German broadcast for ANH but not for the sequels. I also recorded a documentary on the whole saga dubbed both in French and German that I might put on the spleen and these once they all aired. I didn't record Episodes I and II though since I hate them and was at my cousin's for the holiday season.

Thanks for sharing that. Yeah, the sides are massively cropped on your clip, so its not going to be much use to either me or Harmy. You know that there are high quality pre-blu-ray SE german hdtv transport streams for empire strikes back and return of the jedi as well right? In fact all six films have them, with the Attack of the Clones german hdtv transport stream in particular really wiping the floor with its respective blu-ray due to having the original colour palette without the blanket green tint across the whole blu-ray and no DNR like the blu-ray has as well.

Since when does "less grain" mean "higher quality"? Usually less grain means that the image has either been filtered or the compression is strong enough to swallow the grain.

Don't forget: On film grain is usually GOOD.

But: Did the French broadcast come with French crawls in HD? I'd be interested in those. Also I'd REALLY like to have the "Empire of Dreams" doc in German (though it's edited down from the DVD version). It'd be great if you could upload it :)

I don't know much about digital video, but I knew grain was good, though I thought it was even better without it. I can't tell if the crawls are in HD (they aired at the same resolution as the rest of the movie), plus I guess they are also cropped as well.

And about the documentary it's sadly not "Empire of Dreams" (which also aired last night after EP4 but the image quality was terrible and it was only dubbed in French), it's the one that aired on Arte on saturday here in France (which you should have in Germany as well), so of course i have the two dubs (French and German) which I muxed and uploaded on the spleen. Its German title is "Die Saga" ("Les origines d'une saga" in french ("The Origins of the saga")).

Grain is inherent to the physical structure of the film itself.  Many directors selected the film stock they used according to how much grain they wanted in the result.

In the pre-digital age; Grain = Detail. No Grain= No Detail and low quality.

To remove grain from pre-digital age filmed movies destroys the intentions of the director and the production itself. It is supposed to be there.

Removing what is inherent the original physical Film medium via Digital Noise Reduction will always result in a loss of detail and depth, many times resulting closeups of faces looking waxy and fake. As once again they are removing what is supposted to be there just like the color of the sky in effect. Remember grain isn't noise it's part of the nitrate.

It is mind boggling that somehow at this point in time most people think grain is bad. When is reality in is the exact opposite. Not sure how that got started but it is very sad.

For those that are interested in the best looking most lifelike films on home hi-res possible here is good and quick info on what removing grain really does:

http://filmjunk.com/2010/07/12/blu-ray-myths-grain-is-a-flaw/

less quick but interesting

http://www.avsforum.com/t/825293/lots-of-blu-rays-grainy/90

As for me before I purchase any blu-ray I wait for reviews to see if grain structure was left intact. If I see on a pre-digital age film no grain is mentioned [sadly, usually in a positive manner by the reviewer] they will get none of my money.

P.S. I am not refering to the effects of using film in "bad shape" for those physical restoration is light years better than digital scrubbing. But digitial srubbing is cheap fast and makes the common masses happy or so they think.....
