Episode III: Revenge of the Ridiculousness — Page 42

I'm back and no longer afraid of the truth.

Currently I'm working on the Airplane!/Landing on Coruscant scene.  Bob gave me a good starting point, the biggest struggle I'm having at the moment is trying to incorporate the Airplane 2 footage with Shatner as well.  I may just put together a "kitchen sink" version that incorporates everything, use that as an eventual deleted scene, and edit it down from there.

What is the Shatner problem you're having?

Well...I think it may be easier to explain once I have the footage in place, so stay tuned.

Eager is not a color, but if it were, I would be that color.

I'm done with my first pass.  I still have to fix a lot of the audio, especially the transitions, but you guys wanna see it anyway?  Or wait until at least tomorrow, maybe Sunday, when I can clean it up more?

Why don't you post it now so that we can suggest any tweaks before you finish it up.

No Crow breaking the ship in half?

I think using just the Airplane 2 passengers might be better for consistency. And Sonny Bono needs a screen credit. ;)

Also, using the Airplane score throughout the entire sequence would be great, if possible.

Crow, probably not.

Look how big that ship is, there's no reason they can't have different-style compartments for different passengers.  ;-)  Anyway, I don't want to lose the crash position stuff.

The score is tricky for a couple reasons.  Wherever I remove the ROTS music I also lose the SFX, which is okay in some spots but would require a total sound rebuild in others.  And unfortunately Airplane 2 is just two-channel stereo, so there's no way I can remove the music in those scenes without also losing dialogue.

Smoothing this out is gonna be a nightmare. :-(

By that logic, you could splice in random shots from the saucer crash in Star Trek Generations. ;)

If you establish TOS bridge sound effects early on with the first Steve scene, you can carry that over into the crash and throw in the classic Red Alert sound when Stack says to sound the crash alarm.

I think you're on the right track with a little tightening up here and there. More Airplane lines could come over the cockpit radio. And Shatner could still be rambling on in the background after the crash.

I already planned to put some sort of alarm after Stack says the line, but hadn't thought of that specific alarm, thanks!

You're welcome!

More thoughts. As the ship is clearly already in reentry, snip the line from Shatner's aide about that, and come in on "How do you want to play it?"

Also, if you save Lloyd Bridges jumping to right before the control tower gets destroyed, it's slightly more effective. And if you only cut back to Shatner for the rest of the sequence after that, it will imply Stack and company have been added to Anakin's body count. ;)

You can keep them alive by having Stacks lousy landing line come over the radio, if that's too gruesome.

Not a bad idea on the atmosphere line.

With the original discussion of Bob's clip, there was lot of support for having Lloyd jump right before the tower is destroyed, including from me.  I decided to keep Bob's order when I added Shatner...but your last suggestion gave me an idea.  If I have everyone buy it in the tower other than Shatner...instead of Stack's line coming over the radio, how about Force Ghost Stack?

So should I do it like this to preserve the control tower's reaction to McCroskey jumping out, or cut right after he hits the window so it closer timed to the crash?

I like Lloyd jumping out just before the crash.

Like this. I think it's timed quite well and doesn't need to be any closer to the crash.

That's going to be one crowded railing on Endor when you get to Jedi! ;)

Works for me. The "no looking back" line is well timed. :)

Yes, but Anakin actually looks back. (The symmetry between ROTS and Airplane!/Airplane! 2 is spooky.) Pity Ani doesn't give you an opportunity to use Shatner's "I said both hands, dammit!" line.

I think this is the version I'm going with.

Exactly as I imagined it originally! Looks great.
