When you do VFX you have to make sure your black levels match.  It was tough with old optical printers.  When you do a composite these days we do a "gamma slam" and raise the gamma really high to see how a shot looks.  If the black levels are out of wack you will see it.  When they are low it's hard to see that they are in fact different.  And when the colorist crushes the blacks you might lose them all together.
